New York City's smallest borough recycles in a big way. At Staten Island Mall's one-day recycling event, more than 4,000 local residents dropped off nearly 196 tons (432,100 pounds) of used goods-nearly the weight of 36 grown elephants-for donation to various reuse and recycling sites throughout the state. This mountain of materials included computers, televisions, stereos, and CD players, as well as clothing. In addition, 52 tons (114,640 pounds) of cell phones were donated to the Battered Women's Association. For this, the Staten Island Mall received the distinction of America's Marketplace Recycles (AMR) 2006 Recycler of the Year.
The Mall's proprietor, General Growth Properties Inc., began their annual recycling collection in 2004 and publicizes the project through its web site and with public service announcements, signs, and posters inside the mall. Additionally, partners, including the New York Department of Sanitation, the Lower East Side Ecology Center, New York City's Greenmarket Program, and the Department of Parks and Recreation, advertise the event through message boards and on the radio. The next annual collection is scheduled for September 2007.
The Staten Island Mall was also honored with AMR's award for Best Community Partnership for its work with the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Consolidated Edison, and all Staten Island schools to host "Ecology Day." This educational event brings local students, teachers, and parents to the mall to learn how to protect their communities from environmental hazards.
AMR is an RCC partnership with the International
Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC)
.
It promotes recycling and waste reduction at shopping centers.
AMR's annual awards program recognizes outstanding efforts
and achievements by ICSC members nationwide who conserve resources,
recycle, and purchase recycled content products.
Staten Island Mall's recycling efforts exemplify the type of programs encouraged by the RCC within the national priority area of Municipal Solid Waste Recycling.
