Solid Waste and Emergency Response
Action 12 – Improve Communication of Sampling and Testing Results
In order to better inform communities, EPA has taken steps to more clearly communicate the level of contamination for emergency response actions and will continue to improve its approaches. The Office of Emergency Response (OEM) will be the lead office on this Action, working in coordination with EPA's Office of Public Affairs (OPA) to:
- Develop and test a new communication methodology that focuses on providing visual illustrations and written explanations of contamination levels at sites along with recommended actions community members should take based on those contamination levels.
- Identify regions willing to test the approach in real life situations including Superfund sites and emergency responses.
- After exercising and testing the tool, incorporate improvements and work with OPA and the National Incident Coordination Team (NICT) to implement the tool Agency-wide.
