Case Study

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians’ Chumash Casino Resort in Southern California has worked hard to green their operations and decrease environmental impacts with innovative retrofit projects and modified operation and maintenance practices. The tribal environmental and casino management departments have implemented numerous green strategies at the facility to reduce energy and water use, increase waste diversion and recycling, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. The Chumash Casino Resort is committed to reducing potentially dangerous and unnecessary chemicals. All cleaning products are Green Seal certified and microfiber mops are used to reduce water and chemical use. In addition, the facility has an automated escalator cleaner, and developed its own procedure for cleaning casino chips. Choosing less hazardous cleaning products that have positive environmental attributes, and taking steps to reduce exposure can minimize harmful impacts to custodial workers and building occupants, improves indoor air quality, and reduces water and ambient air pollution, while also ensuring the effectiveness of cleaning in removing biological and other contaminants from the building’s interior. The following are examples of positive environmental attributes in a cleaning product:

  • Biodegradability;
  • Low toxicity;
  • Low volatile organic compound (VOC) content;
  • Reduced packaging; and
  • Low life cycle energy use.

EPA’s Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) site helps the federal government "buy green," and in doing so, uses the federal government’s enormous buying power to stimulate market demand for green products and services. Geared first to help federal purchasers, this site can also help green vendors, businesses large and small, and consumers finder greener products. The Green Cleaning - Environmental Attributes Defined site may be particularly helpful for facilities who want to know more about green cleaning products.
