Applying for Permanent Employment in the Water Program

Steps to Becoming a Valued Member of the Office of Water Team:

  1. Identify the job you want. All vacancy announcements are available on USAJobs (http://www.usajobs.gov), the official job site of the Federal Government. USAJOBS is a one stop source for Federal jobs and employment information. To identify the Office of Water jobs, go to the usajobs web site and click on “Search Jobs”. Click on “Agency Search” and scroll down to the “Environmental Protection Agency” under the “Select Department” feature. You will get a listing and description of all EPA jobs. To select only the Office of Water jobs (i.e.. vacancy announcements), type in “OW” in “Refine Search with Additional Key Words.”

  2. Review the vacancy announcement and carefully follow the application instructions Once you have identified the job you want, review the vacancy announcement to determine if you meet the qualification requirements. When applying, carefully follow the application procedures and make sure you address the ranking factors in you application or resume. Make sure you transmit you application by the date specified in the announcement or you will not be considered further for the position. For more information on writing your resume and addressing the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the job, visit USAJobs (http://usajobs.gov/infocenter/resumetips.asp).

  3. You will be evaluated on the information contained in your application and your resume. Your application should contain information about the quality and extent of your education, relevant training, and job experience.

  4. All applicants will be considered.  In some cases, applicants will be ranked based on their qualifications, and the highest-ranking candidates will be forwarded to the selecting official for interviews. If may be several months before you hear. If you want to check on the status of your application or the hiring process, you should contact the Human Resource specialist listed on the vacancy announcement.

  5. If the selecting official is impressed with your credentials, references will be called. If the selecting official selects you for the position, you will be contacted by the Human Resource Specialist listed on the vacancy announcement with a job offer. You will then need to complete a number of forms, including security clearance forms before you can begin work. Generally, you may begin work on a provisional basis while your security clearance is processed.
