WaterNews for April 2, 1998WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water. Seven meetings will be held nationwide to reinforce efforts to begin implementation of the Clean Water Action Plan announced by President Clinton and Vice President Gore on February 19, 1998. Robert Perciasepe, Assistant Administrator for Water at EPA, James Lyons, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for Natural Resources and the Environment, and Michael Davis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Civil Works at the Department of Army will attend the forums as well as officials from the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The meetings will provide officials and staff from state, tribal and federal agencies, and non-governmental representatives the opportunity to discuss the Clean Water Action Plan and implementation efforts. A key objective is to discuss how to work across agencies and levels of government at the regional and local level to successfully implement the Action Plan. April 14 San Francisco, CA Assistant Administrator for Water Testifies to Congress on Animal Feeding OperationsAnimal feeding operations or "AFOS" was the main topic of a hearing held by the US Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry on April 2. EPA Assistant Administrator Bob Perciasepe described for the Committee the work that EPA is now doing to reduce water pollution from AFOS, including the recently released EPA draft AFO strategy. In addition, EPA is working with the US Department of Agriculture to develop a joint Strategy on AFOS by July of this year. Other witnesses included the Governor of the State of Maryland, the US Department of Agriculture, the City of Tulsa, agricultural organizations, and public interest groups.
