WaterNews for April 16, 1998WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water. On Wednesday, April 22, people in the United States and around the world will pause to celebrate Earth Day. For more than 20 years, Earth Day has provided an annual opportunity to reflect on the importance of the natural world and to take action to preserve and protect the environment. Federal, State and local governments, working with business, and citizens have made steady progress in reducing pollution. The Nations's rivers, lakes and coastal waters, and the quality of drinking waters, have improved over the past several decades. President Clinton announced in February of this year a new Clean Water Action Plan that describes over 100 specific actions to expand governmental efforts to protect water quality. This effort to expand government commitment to protecting the Nation's water resources will have major benefits, but actions by individual citizens are also a critical part of protecting water quality. The Office of Water is supporting or developing a range of programs that give citizens a chance to get directly involved in protecting water resources. Some examples include -
