WaterNews for April 16, 1998

WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water.

Celebrate EARTH DAY !!

On Wednesday, April 22, people in the United States and around the world will pause to celebrate Earth Day.

For more than 20 years, Earth Day has provided an annual opportunity to reflect on the importance of the natural world and to take action to preserve and protect the environment.

Federal, State and local governments, working with business, and citizens have made steady progress in reducing pollution. The Nations's rivers, lakes and coastal waters, and the quality of drinking waters, have improved over the past several decades.

President Clinton announced in February of this year a new Clean Water Action Plan that describes over 100 specific actions to expand governmental efforts to protect water quality.

This effort to expand government commitment to protecting the Nation's water resources will have major benefits, but actions by individual citizens are also a critical part of protecting water quality. The Office of Water is supporting or developing a range of programs that give citizens a chance to get directly involved in protecting water resources. Some examples include -

  • Adopt Your Watershed -- This program provides information and technical resources to help local organizations identify rivers, lakes, bays or watersheds that they can take an active part in preserving and protecting. More information is available on the Internet at http://www.epa.gov/adopt/.

  • The WAVE Program -- This program helps explains how businesses and other organizations develop measures to conserve water, thus benefiting the environment and saving money. More information is available on the Internet at http://www.epa.gov/OWM/genwave.htm.

  • Drinking Water Information -- Check information about the water you get from your drinking water system online at http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/sdwis/sdwis_ov.html.

  • Citizen Monitoring -- Learn more about how you can get involved in monitoring the quality of the river, lakes or bay near you at http://www.epa.gov/owow/monitori ng/vol.html.

Earth Day reminds us that we all must take an active part in protecting water quality, the environment, and the health of the planet--Earth is a water planet.
