WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water.

Draft Framework for Unified Watershed Assessments, Restoration Priorities, and Restoration Strategies

One of the key actions in the recently published Clean Water Action Plan asks states, tribes, governments, organizations and the public to work together to conduct unified watershed assessments. A new cooperative, intergovernmental process is being developed to assess watershed condition, identify watersheds where aquatic systems do not meet clean water and natural resource goals, and begin the process of implementing action to restore watershed health.

A unified watershed assessment interagency/state team has completed a draft unified watershed assessment framework. This draft framework proposes flexible approaches for the development of unified assessments, restoration priorities, and restoration action strategies. The draft framework is available for review on the Clean Water Action Plan website at http://www.epa.gov/history/topics/cwa/03.htm. Comments and review are requested by May 22 to Barry Burgan at burgan.barry@epamail.epa.gov or (202) 260-7060. This framework will be further developed and amended as needed, based on suggestions and comments. The final unified watershed assessment framework is expected to be issued in June.
