On January 28, President Clinton officially proclaimed 1998 as Year of the Ocean. The
Department of Commerce and U.S. Navy will co-host the National Ocean Conference on June 11

awareness of the importance of the ocean by including the full range of U.S. ocean activities and
their overall impact for the nation; it will involve representatives of academia, business and
industry, and environmental groups and local, state, and federal government, including President
Clinton and Vice President Gore. The four central themes of the conference are commerce,
global security, environment, and exploration and education.
