WaterNews for August 27, 1998

WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water.

Inside this week's WaterNews:
1) Water Quality Criteria for Ammonia
2) Unified National Discharges for Vessels in the Armed Services

1) 1998 Update of Ambient Water Quality Criteria for Ammonia

On August 24, 1998, EPA published the 1998 Update of Ambient Water Quality Criteria for Ammonia. The update provides guidance to states, territories, and tribes in developing water quality standards under Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act and is an analysis of the aquatic toxicity data for ammonia in freshwater. The document also contains policy recommendations on adoption of ammonia criteria into water quality standards, particularly with regard to seasonal adjustments of the criteria concentrations.

EPA welcomes public comment on the criteria guidance. For a copy of the fact sheet and the guidance, visit http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/standards/amonsub.html

2) Uniform National Discharge for Vessels of the Armed Forces

On August 11, EPA Administrator Carol Browner signed the proposed rule, Uniform National Discharge Standards for Vessels of the Armed Forces. The proposal, jointly promulgated by EPA and the Department of Defense, identifies discharges from armed forces vessels for which discharge standards will be written over the next two to three years. These rules will help to protect the oceans from oil releases, persistent toxic pollutants, invasive nonindigenous species, and other threats to ocean and coastal habitats from discharges from vessels. Development of the vessel discharge standards supports the National Ocean Conference initiative to Protect our Beaches and Coastal Waters.
