Inside this week's WaterNews: 1) Federal Agencies Sign New Plan for Chesapeake EcosystemToday, 20 federal agencies signed a new Chesapeake Ecosystem Unified Plan which expands current restoration efforts with 50 new initiatives aimed at protecting the Chesapeake Bay region. The new plan follows the framework for protecting America's waterways set forward under President Clinton's Clean Water Action Plan. These new initiatives address the Chesapeake Bay's most pressing environmental issues which include wetlands loss, Pfiesteria monitoring and research, reduction of harmful nutrients, and pollution prevention. To find out more about the Chesapeake Bay Program visit http://www.epa.gov/r3chespk. 2) New Watershed Assistance Grants AvailableEPA's Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds recently awarded River Network $300,000 to distribute grants to local watershed partnerships to support organizational development. River Network, a national organization based in Portland, Oregon, supports river and watershed advocates at the local, state, and regional levels to build effective partnerships and organizations. The Watershed Assistance Grants program will distribute grants ranging from $2,000 to $30,000 in 1999 to support watershed partnerships working to protect and restore their watersheds. Grant applications will be available after December 1, 1998. For additional information on funding opportunities, visit River Network's web site at http://www.rivernetwork.org/nonprofi.htm. 3) EPA Releases Water Information Systems CompendiumOn November 1, EPA's Office of Water released the "Water Program Systems Compendium FY1998," which provides a road map to the kinds of information available to water program managers as they make policy and program decisions. The information is presented in a combination of text and graphic profiles for more than 140 information systems on water management. These systems are maintained by EPA's Office of Water, other EPA program offices, federal agencies, and nongovernment organizations. Additionally, the compendium includes a list of over 200 federal, state, private, academic, and public interest group websites that link to environmental program information as well as to specific information systems and data bases that contain water quality information.
