WaterNews for April 29, 1999WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water.
Inside this week's WaterNews:
1) National Drinking Water Week is May 2-8National Drinking Water Week is May 2-8, 1999, and this year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Communities across the nation have planned events including exhibits in public parks, shopping malls, and water treatment plants. Groups have also scheduled river cleanups, hazardous waste collections, and other water pollution-fighting efforts. To find out more about the week visit the Blue Thumb website at http://www.awwa.org/bluethum.htm2) 1997 Drinking Water National Compliance Report ReleasedEPA has released the second annual national drinking water compliance report. It summarizes public water system violations of drinking water requirements during 1997, and also makes recommendations for resources needed to improve compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. The national summary pulls together state reports which list water system violations of drinking water maximum contaminant levels, required treatment techniques, monitoring requirements, and variances and exemptions. The full text as well as a short summary of the report can be found at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/annual on the Internet.3) EPA proposes Revisions to the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Regulation for Public Water SystemsEPA is asking for comment on proposed revisions to the unregulated contaminant monitoring regulation for public water systems. As required by the Safe Drinking Water Act amendments of 1996, EPA is proposing to change the requirements for how public water systems collect information about the occurrence of contaminants for which there are no current drinking water standards. The information collected from this monitoring will be used by EPA as it makes regulatory determinations through the Contaminant Candidate List. Proposed revisions would reduce the number of unregulated contaminants currently monitored by water systems. Also, only a representative sample of small water systems would be required to monitor, and EPA will pay the monitoring costs for these systems. For information on the proposed rule, go to http://www.epa.gov/safewater/standard/ucmr on the Internet.Note: On January 8, 1999, EPA published a rule suspending the current round of unregulated contaminant monitoring for small public water systems. See http://www.epa.gov/safewater/smallsys/unregfr.html on the Internet for that notice.
