WaterNews for July 8, 1999

WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water.

Inside this week's WaterNews:

1) Clean Boating Week
2) Industrial Laundries Decision
3) Urban Air Toxics Strategy

1) Clean Boating Week

July 10-18 is Clean Boating Week. This is a time to celebrate good boating and clean water with activities on every boating waterway nationwide. The site of the National Clean Boating Week kick off will be Cleveland, Ohio and will take place on Saturday, July 10, 1999. For more information on Clean Boating Week visit http://www.cleanboating.org Exit EPA Disclaimer on the Internet. For more information on clean marinas visit http://www.epa.gov/owow/NPS/marinas/ on the Internet.

2) Industrial Laundries Decision

EPA announced that it will not issue national standards requiring treatment of wastewater from the nation's 1700 industrial laundries. EPA found that better environmental protection could be accomplished through pollution prevention at the source. EPA is withdrawing the 1997 proposal to require pretreatment of some wastewater from industrial laundries prior to discharge to municipal wastewater treatment facilities. EPA will not establish a new regulation for the Industry.

For a fact sheet on the announcement, visit http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/guide on the Internet.

3) Urban Air Toxics Strategy

Yesterday EPA announced a strategy to further reduce toxic air emissions in hundreds of areas across the country. The new strategy identifies 33 toxic air pollutants *such as benzene, mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)* that present the greatest threat to public health and the environment. Many of these pollutants can contribute to water quality impairments. 10 states have identified air deposition as a source of pollution on their lists of impaired waters.

The strategy is available at http://www.epa.gov/ttn/uatw/urban/urbanpg.html on the Internet.
