Inside this week's WaterNews: 1) Vice President Receives Ocean Policy Recommendations2) Water Utilities Run Successful Y2K Tests 1) Vice President Receives Ocean Policy Recommendations
On September 2, 1999, a report containing
recommendations for a comprehensive ocean policy to
guide federal efforts was presented to the Vice
President at the New England Aquarium in Boston. The
report responds to President Clinton's request at last
year's historic National Ocean Conference in Monterey,
California, for a report from his Cabinet on
recommendations for a coordinated, disciplined, and
long-term federal ocean policy. Over ten Cabinet-level
departments and independent agencies with ocean
responsibilities worked together to develop the
recommendations over the last year. To ensure a
coordinated, focused, federal effort to implement the
report, the Vice President will convene a high-level
task force composed of relevant federal agency and
department representatives and will be chaired by the
Deputy National Security Advisor and the Chair of the
Council on Environmental Quality. Partnership with
outside stakeholders is a key element of the report,
and the federal government will work closely with
tribal, state and local government and private entities
as the implementation phase moves forward. For a copy
of the report, please visit National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's website under the heading:

Control systems, equipment with embedded computer chips, and communication links were among the components tested. In all cases, operations continued smoothly. EPA is preparing a summary of the lessons learned to share with utilities and other organizations to continue the process of getting ready for Y2K. EPA has also posted on its website three drinking water and wastewater Y2K preparation case studies that were prepared in cooperation with the California State Water Resource Control Board and three California drinking water and wastewater utilities. A list of the tested facilities, the three case studies and additional information, which includes a paper on contingency planning, is available at: http://www.epa.gov/year2000/ow.htm or by calling EPA at 202-260-0173.TRY OUR OTHER WEBSITES:Information from EPA*s Office of Water about each state is available on the "Water Where You Live" website.
