WaterNews for January 6, 2000WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water. Inside this week's WaterNews:
1) State of the Chesapeake Bay Report Released
The State of the Bay report describes the health of the Chesapeake Bay, its tributaries, habitats, and the wildlife that call the Bay home. Major sections include living resources, Bay stressors and water quality. The report also highlights the most challenging issues this nationally recognized program faces as Bay managers begin to set restoration goals beyond 2000. For more information, visit http://www.chesapeakebay.net/pubs/sob/index.html 2) Correction to Federal Register Notice for Proposed Standard for Dioxins in Biosolids EPA recently proposed to set a limit of 300 part per trillion toxic equivalents for dioxins in biosolids that are to be recycled and applied to the land as fertilizer. The numerical value for the ceiling concentration for dioxins in Table 1 on page 72061 of the federal register notice for the Proposed Standards is erroneously stated as a result of a typesetting error. The correct value is 0.0003 mg/kg toxic equivalents. This is equal to 300 parts per trillion toxic equivalents. The preamble to the proposed rule states the correct numerical value. EPA will be issuing a formal notice of correction in the federal register within one week. Visit http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/biosolids/ on the Internet for more information on the proposed standard. 3) TMDL Comment Period Ends January 20, 2000 The comment period on proposed total maximum daily load rules and guidance ends January 20, 2000. In August, 1999, President Clinton announced the new proposal to strengthen EPA*s *total maximum daily load* (TMDL) requirements to help restore polluted waterways nationwide. For more information on the proposed rule, including state-by-state maps and lists of impaired waters, visit http://www.epa.gov/owow/tmdl/ on the Internet. **************************************************************** Please forward this message to your friends and colleagues who share an interest in water-related issues and would like to hear from EPA's Office of Water.
