WaterNews for January 21, 2000WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water. Inside this week's WaterNews: 1) EPA Issues Effluent Guidelines for Landfills EPA is issuing final effluent guidelines for the landfills industry. This final rule establishes technology-based effluent limitations for wastewater discharged to navigable waters from the operation of new and existing landfills. It provides increased protection to human health and aquatic life by reducing discharges of pollutants by over 900 thousand pounds per year. The new regulation only applies to landfills that discharge wastewater directly into receiving waters. It does not apply to landfills that discharge wastewater into a publicly owned treatment works.
