1) EPA and USDA Announce Actions on MTBE

On March 20, EPA Administrator Carol Browner and Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman announced actions to significantly reduce or eliminate the use of the fuel additive MTBE and boost the use of safe alternatives like ethanol. MTBE is an oxygenate which is used in approximately 87% of the reformulated gasoline in America, but which poses threats to drinking water supplies in many areas of the country. Browner and Glickman called on Congress to take immediate actions "because Americans deserve both clean air and clean water – and never one at the expense of the other."
