WaterNews for April 27, 2000

WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water.

Inside this week's WaterNews:

  1. National Watershed Forum: Request for Pre-Proposals
  2. Data Available on Radionuclides

1) National Watershed Forum: Request for Pre-Proposals

EPA is soliciting pre-proposals from organizations interested in convening a National Watershed Forum. EPA will award up to $300,000 to support the efforts of the organization that is selected to convene the National Watershed Forum. The National Watershed Forum, which will convene in 2001, will help the efforts of diverse, community-oriented watershed interests by providing opportunities for these interests to: investigate barriers and future directions and actions needed to advance watershed protection and restoration efforts; learn about innovative tools and creative approaches for watershed protection; and form networks and build partnerships. Pre-proposals are due on June 1, 2000. For more information, visit http://www.epa.gov/owow/preprop/fedreg2.html on the Internet.

2) Data Available on Radionuclides

EPA is revising the current radionuclides regulation, which has been in effect since 1977, and is setting a standard for uranium as required by the 1986 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. To support this effort, EPA has published a notice of data availability for radionuclides (alpha emitters, beta & photon emitters, radium 226 & 228, and uranium) in drinking water. New information is available on health effects from exposure to radionuclides in drinking water, occurrence, treatment options, monitoring requirements, and analytical methods. Data concerning the costs and benefits of several regulatory options is available and, EPA is soliciting public comment on a number of issues raised by this new information. EPA is evaluating final regulatory options in light of these additional data and analyses and plans to, in accordance with a court agreement, publish a final rule in November of 2000. The Notice of Data Availability and additional information are available at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/radionuc.html on the Internet.
