WaterNews for May 19, 2000WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water. Inside this week's WaterNews:
1) Round II National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Streamlining Rule published On May 15, 2000 EPA published the NPDES Round II Streamlining Rule. This rule amends the current NPDES regulations at 40 CFR parts 122, 123, 124, and 125 to eliminate redundant regulatory provisions, clarify regulatory requirements, and remove or streamline unnecessary procedures which do not provide any environmental benefits. For a copy of the rule, see http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/EPA-WATER/2000/May/Day-15/w10764.htm on the Internet. 2) Correction to May 12 notice on the California Toxics Rule Last week's Water News included a notice of the proposed California Toxics Rule. The notice should have stated that EPA published the final California Toxics Rule. The final California Toxics Rule establishes water quality criteria for priority toxic pollutants for California inland surface waters, enclosed bays, and estuaries. These federally promulgated criteria, together with state-adopted designated uses, will create water quality standards for those California waters. This rule satisfies Clean Water Act requirements and fills the need for water quality standards for priority toxic pollutants to protect public health and the environment. The state has adopted implementation procedures to ensure that the resulting water quality standards will be appropriately and consistently applied throughout the state.
