WaterNews for June 16, 2000

WaterNews is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Water.

Inside this week's WaterNews:

  1. EPA Releases Great Waters Report
  2. Public Comment Period Proposed Revisions to the Definition of Fill

1) EPA Releases Great Waters Report

EPA's Office of Air released the third report to Congress on deposition of air pollutants to the great waters. The report provides updated scientific information on the trends in emissions, transport, deposition, fate and effects on the great waters of toxic pollutants of concern. The great waters include the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain, and Chesapeake Bay, and certain other coastal waters (identified by their designation as sites in the National Estuarine Research Reserve System or the National Estuary Program). The report also discusses the many programs EPA, states, tribes and others are implementing to address the pollutants of concern to the Great Waters. In addition, the report describes recent advancements in scientific research and tools used to improve our understanding of atmospheric deposition to the Great Waters. For a copy of the report, visit http://www.epa.gov/oar/oaqps/gr8water/ on the Internet.

2) Public Comment Period Proposed Revisions to the Definition of Fill

EPA has extended the comment period 30 days for the proposed revisions to the definition of fill to July 19, 2000. On April 20, 2000, EPA and the Army proposed a rule to revise the Clean Water Act regulations defining the term Afill material.@ The Army and EPA definitions of "fill material" currently differ from each other, so the proposal would amend both the Army regulations and the EPA regulations to provide a single consistent definition. For more information on the proposed revisions, visit http://www.epa.gov/owow/wetlands/fill.html on the Internet.
