EPA today is proposing strict new controls to protect public health and the environment from one of the nation's leading causes of water pollution -- animal wastes from large, industrial feedlot operations. The new requirements would apply to as many as 39,000 concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) across the country. EPA's proposal includes revisions to the definition of a CAFO, limits to land application of animal waste, and new technology requirements and effluent limits for discharges.
