EPA Seeks Comment on Draft TMDL Cost Study

EPA is seeking comment on its draft cost study of the total maximum daily load (TMDL) program for polluted waterbodies. TMDLs are pollution limits set for a waterway, depending on its use. These limits are allocated among all the pollutant sources impacting an impaired water. The report was requested by Congress last fall, and focuses on the costs to the government and polluters of the existing TMDL program. Comments are due by December 7, 2001. A copy of the report and additional information are available at http://www.epa.gov/owow/tmdl/.

EPA Seeks Comment on Proposal to Defer July 2000 TMDL Rule

EPA has proposed to delay by 18 months the effective date of the total maximum daily load (TMDL) rule published on July 13, 2000. The Federal Register notice, published on August 9, also proposes to revise the date on which states are required to submit their next lists of impaired waters under the Clean Water Act, from April 1, 2002 to Oct. 1, 2002. Comments on the proposal are due by September 10. For more information see http://www.epa.gov/owow/tmdl/.

Chesapeake Bay Program Awards 59 Restoration Grants

Earlier this month, EPA and The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation awarded over $1.5 million in Chesapeake Bay Program Small Watershed Grants to 59 community-led organizations and local governments from across the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Projects selected range from citizen water quality monitoring to riparian buffer restoration to oyster gardening, and will take place in Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The Small Watersheds Grant Program was created in 1998, and is funded by EPA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the USDA Forest Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Dover Corporation. What's Up With Our Nation's Waters?

Do you know what percentage of our nation's waters are clean, what pollutes the waters that aren't, and what you can do to help? EPA has produced a 24-page booklet, designed primarily for children aged 10 to15, that presents key findings of the National Water Quality Inventory in an easy-to-read format. The booklet includes projects for school or for fun, a water quiz, a glossary, and a list of resources for more information. What's Up With Our Nation's Waters? can be viewed at http://www.epa.gov/owow/monitoring/nationswaters/waters.pdf (PDF, 1.8MB). It is also available in hard copy from EPA's National Service Center for Environmental Publications at 1-800-490- 9198; please include the publication number when ordering: EPA 841-F-00-005.
