Welcome to the Barataria-Terrebonne estuary. Located west and south of New Orleans, this web of bays, lagoons, marshes, and swamps covers more then 4 million acres! It is home to approximately 735 different species of birds, fish, and other animals that spend all or part of their lives here. Some birds travel from as far as South America in springtime to rest and feed here. For a variety of reasons, however, this special place is disappearing quickly—22 square miles each year is lost! To learn more about this estuary, including how people in the community are working to protect its future, click on the button to the right to take a tour.
