2008 Casco Bay Pie Chart showing NEP Habitat Category by Acreage

Total Acreage: 637.78

The Casco Bay NEP has protected and/or restored a total of 637.78 acres of habitat in 2008. The pie chart shows the proportion of acreage devoted to each habitat-type, including 99% for habitats categorized as Other and less than 1% each for Riparian and In-Stream habitats.

The Table immediately below provides brief summary information about the protection and/or restoration projects completed and reported by the NEP in 2008.

Year 2008 Projects
Project Name Activity Project Description Habitat Type Acreage Linear Miles
Casco Bay Significant Wildlife Habitat Designation - Seabird Nesting Islands* Protection/Maintenance CBEP's close partners, Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection, implemented a new rule protecting significant seabird nesting habitat that limits any construction, digging, filling or other activities on designated islands through a permitting process. The area covered by the rule and reported here includes 61 Casco Bay islands designated as significant seabird nesting islands. For more information see http://www.maine.gov/dep/blwq/docstand/nrpa/birdhabitat/ Other 404 0
Hamilton Sanctuary Protection/Maintenance Acquisition of a key parcel linking previously separated portions of Maine Audubon's Hamilton Preserve. Established conservation easement for "double layer protection" on remaining uplands. Protect lands adjacent to extensive mud flats, thus protecting the mud flats as well. Other 148 0
Mill Brook Bank Stabilization Rehabilitation CBEP funded installation of root wads, native log deflectors and stone vanes to deflect stream energy away from an eroding bank. Structures also enhanced fish habitat by adding coarse woody debris and increasing habitat complexity. In-Stream 0.28 0
Old Town House Park Riparian Planting Phase II Reestablishment Local Youth Conservation Corps teams planted approximately 1.5 acres of trees and shrubs. The planting included a variety of species found on similar floodplain sites nearby. Planting design took into consideration walking trails, a scenic point with a stone bench from which to observe the Royal River, and other park amenities. Trees and shrubs were irrigated through the driest part of the sumer and fall. Mulch fabric was used to further to increase survival. Riparian 1.5 0
Ragged Island Protection/Maintenance A conservation easement was purchased on this 80 acre island by Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Terms of the easement restrict and cluster future development to a small area in the vicinity of existing development, and it regulate vegetation management and footpath construction, thus protecting the value of the site as a seabird nesting area. The easement also ensures and limits public access to a small beach that is a traditional picnic site for area residents. Other 80 0
Walnut Crest Farm Buffer Restoration Reestablishment A total of 600 feet of fencing was constructed to exclude cattle from the riparian area. 3700 white pine saplings and approximately 150 trees and shrubs of other species were planted. Project funds also supported construction of an alternative water source for livestock. Riparian 4 0
Total 637.78 0
