Total Acreage: 1,490.00


The Massachusetts Bays Program NEP has protected and/or restored a total of 1,490.00 acres of habitat in 2008. The pie chart shows the proportion of acreage devoted to each habitat-type, including 96% for Wetland habitat and 4% for Pond habitat.

The Table immediately below provides brief summary information about the protection and/or restoration projects completed and reported by the NEP in 2008.

Green Harbor River Tide Gate Replacement Rehabilitation The funds obtained were used toward the purchase of a tide gate for the restoration of tidal flushing to Green Harbor River. Tidal Wetland 637 0
Lily Pond Water Resource Protection Protection/Maintenance The funds were used for the purchase of parcels adjacent to the pond and reservoir to protect drinking water from effects of any potential land use change. Pond 32 0
Mill River Restoration Reestablishment Replace flood control structure with culverts to allow water to pass unimpeded on incoming and outgoing tides. Surveys for soft-shelled clams will be conducted to monitor project success. Tidal Wetland 50 0
Phragmites Control in the Upper Great Marsh Rehabilitation Through the use of chemicals, fire, cutting, etc. to control expansion of Phragmites and restore the upper Great Marsh. Tidal Wetland 500 0
Town Creek Culvert Repair Reestablishment Emergency repairs were performed to allow a better flow of tidal water into the marsh. The full project will call for better control and more extensive tidal flushing to restore a brackish salt/fresh coastal marsh that is currently overgriown with Phragmites. Tidal Wetland 250 0
Upper Shawme Pond Fish Run Restoration Reestablishment Mill Creek is the only active herring run left in Sandwich. Upper Shawme Pond use to be the spawning grounds for alewife and eels before the fish run was left stranded by lack of flow. As part of a dam reconstruction project, Sandwich is installing an Alaskan steep pass fish ladder to restore fish access Pond 21 2
