The San Francisco Estuary Partnership NEP has protected and/or restored a total of 21,674.99 acres of habitat in 2008. The pie chart shows the proportion of acreage devoted to each habitat-type, including 58% for Riparian habitat, 22% for Upland habitat, 12% for Wetland habitat, and 8% for habitats categorized as Other.

The Table immediately below provides brief summary information about the protection and/or restoration projects completed and reported by the NEP in 2008.

Blair Ranch Acquisition Protection/Maintenance The Santa Clara County Open Space Authority acquired the Blair Ranch to protect existing natural resources and provide open space and public access. This is a critical acquisition protecting one of the most rapidly developing regions in the Bay Area. It will provide necessary recreational opportunities while inhibiting habitat fragmentation. It will become part of a complex conneted preserve for a proposed trail and wildlife corridor over miles of foothills around San Francisco Bay. Agricultural Land 868 0
Brisbane Acres III Acquisition Protection/Maintenance The City of Brisbane acquired 6.4 acres containing plant and animal endangered species. These properties complement the 40.6 acres of existing protected lands south of the City of San Francisco and included in the San Bruno Mountain Habitat Conservation Plan the first such plan in the nation. Endangered species include the Mission Blue and Callippe Silverspot butterflies. Field/Meadow 6.4 0
Cordonices Creek Restoration, Phase II Rehabilitation The creek has been regraded and infrastructure removed from the channel to increase creek habitat and flood plain function. The new channel is more sinuous with a series of pools, riffles, and runs to create spawining areas for steelhead/rainbow trout. A concrete wall was removed from flood plain and two culverts were replaced with bridges. Riparian 5.92 0
Crayne Ranch Protection/Maintenance Purchase of conservation easement, which will prevent any non-agricultural development at the ranch. This easement will preserve the history and tradition of agriculture that are unique to the Town of Tomales. Grassland 291 0
Dolcini Ranch Acquisition Protection/Maintenance Conservation easement purchased to protect open space from development, given the property's short distance to two growing urban environments. Agricultural Land 585 0
Dry Creek Fish Barrier and Habitat Enhancement Rehabilitation Removal of fish barrier, replacing with vortex boulder weirs, willow brush mattresses and implementing toe rock protection; streambanks replanted with native plantings to provide shade cover for stream. Riparian 0 0
Eden Landing Ponds Enhancement Replacement of deteriorated infrastructure, including water control structures between ponds 4C and 3C, ponds 4 and 5, ponds 5 and 6C, pond 6B, pond 8A, and ponds 9-8A. Project will improve circulation between these ponds, decrease salinity levels and increase management capabilities to promote increased waterfowl and shorebird use. Tidal Wetland 1,127 0
Giacomini Phase I Rehabilitation Phase I of the Project included demolition of dairy barns near C Street, partial levee removal north of Lagunitas Creek in the southern end of the East Pasture, removal of agricultural infrastructure such as pipelines and fences, excavation of manure disposal areas in the pasture and filling of manure ponds at the Dairy Facility. In addition, special status species enhancement efforts were being conducted in Tomasini Triangle in the Giacomini Ranch and near Olema Creek. Agricultural Land 613 0
Giant Salamander Trail Rehabilitation Rehabilitation Large culvert removed, along with associated fill material over San Gregorio Creek, with a bridge installed in its place. Trail restoration along logging roads. Forest/Woodland 0 0
Gregerson Ranch Acquisition Protection/Maintenance Land acquisition from Daniel and Virginia Gregerson. The property is surrounded by the 4,262-acre Rancho Corral de Tierra property, acquired by the Peninsula Open Space Trust in 2001. This parcel is destined to become part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Grassland 204 0
Invasive Spartina Project Rehabilitation The spread of introduced Spartina threatens the ecosystem of the nearly 70,000 acres of San Francisco baylands. Wetland restoration projects in the south and central San Francisco Bay have been impacted by Spartina alterniflora and its hybrids. The California Coastal Conservancy's Invasive Spartina Project established a region-wide coordination of research, mapping, monitoring, permitting and treatment.By fall of 2006, 1,750 acres were treated or retreated. It's estimated that $1.5 million is needed per year for the next 3-4 years to fully eradicate the Spartina. Tidal Wetland 1,400 0
Kent Canyon Fish Passage Rehabilitation Full replacement of a circular steel culvert which had been a barrier to coho and steelhead salmon. Culvert was replace with an open natural-bottomed arched culvert. The new crossing facilitates fish passage and passing of large woody debris and channel bedload down Redwood Creek where they are used for salmon spawing substrate. Riparian 0 0
Lagunitas Creek Sediment Control Rehabilitation Various erosion control measures will be used to protect Lagunitas Creek, in order to reduce fine sediment loading and improve streambed conditions; measures include laying back of streambank, planting native riparian plants to hold streambanks. Lauff's Ranch Acquisition Protection/Maintenance The California Coastal Conservancy provided funds to the state Wildlife Conservation Board to acquire Lauff's Ranch. It was a top priority for many public/private parties to prevent a subdvision into 75 parcels for residential development in Napa County. The acquisition protects a unique assemblage of ecological communities and it connects with other protected lands, resulting in over 40,000 acres of contiguous protected land and offering to manage multiple species and their habitats on an ecosystem level. Linda Falls Protection/Maintenance Donation of a conservation easement which adds to an existing 102-acre easement donated in 1998; connects important riparian corridor to state park at Mt. St. Helena and Wildlake Ranch. Forest/Woodland 40 0
Lower Walnut Creek Emergency Interim Protection Rehabilitation Removal of 200,000 cubic yards of sediment and restoration of 1.5 miles of levees on lower Walnut Creek between Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and the Clayton Valley Drain. Project allows for conveyance of 1% storm flows without flooding targeted community; restoration of approximately 8 acres of seasonal and perennial wetlands. Riparian 8 1.5
Marsh Creek Fish Ladder Rehabilitation Following collaborative planning and hydraulic modeling of several alternataives, a fish ladder was determined to be the most cost effective manner to provide passage and still meet flood control and channel stability management objectives. The project involved building the fish ladder, slope protection, the installation of an interpretive sign and a season of passage /spawning monitoring. In-Stream 0 0.04
Mori Point Coastal Trail Rehabilitation Rehabilitation of important trail connection between upland grassland and Rockaway Beach, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Project included debris removal, planting native plants. The lower portion of the trail meets outdoor accessibility criteria: gentle incline, firm surface and features that help keep the trail stay dry in the winter. Grassland 0 6.6
Napa River Oxbow Preserve, Phase 1 Rehabilitation Creation of a park in the oxbow of the Napa River. The site is laid out with an upper and lower terrace. The upper terrace includes a small parking lot and a walking trail with stone markers and seatwalls. The lower terrace includes smaller walking trails that end in overlooks surrounded by stone boulders for resting spots and views of the Napa River. Forest/Woodland 13 0
Panfiglio Ranch Protection/Maintenance Purchase of development rights to the ranch in order to keep the land undeveloped. This purchase links two other ranches also protected by the Marin Agricultural Land Trust, providing a permanent wildlife corridor. There is now a continuous band of protected lands totaling more than 7,600 acres in the area. Agricultural Land 810 0
Pillar Point Bluff Protection/Maintenance Purchase of property by the Peninsula Open Space Trust, which will add acreage to existing open space area and will provide an unobstructed view along a stretch of San Mateo County's coastal bluff. Quail Ridge Reserve Land Acquisition, Phase III Protection/Maintenance The University of California, Davis purchased on behalf of the UC Natural Reserve System the property to be incorporated into approximately the 2,000 acre Quail Ridge Reserve. It will provide habitat protection for native plants and wildife and University-sponsored research and teaching. The 2 parcels also serve as buffers from development and will enhance natural resource values of the current Reserve. Grassland 157 0
Roche Ranch Acquisition Protection/Maintenance The project is the acquisition of Roche Ranch in southern Sonoma County. It includes preservation and restoration of the entire main stem of Tolay Creek, linking it to Tolay Lake Regional Park adjacent to approximately 40,000 acres of protected baylands in Somoma, Napa and Marin counties. The acquisition allows for a 7-mile trail corridor linking the San Francisco Bay Trail at Sears Point in San Pablo Bay. Other 1,657 2.5
Smith-Madrone Acquisition Protection/Maintenance Save-the-Redwoods League is acquiring a conservation easement over the the entire 120 acres of the Smith-Madrone Property adjacent to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park in Napa County and subsequently acquisition of fee title to a 55-acre portion of the property. This will permanently protect existing agricultural land but limit the expansion of vineyards on the property. The League will transfer ownership of the 55 acres to the California Department of Parks and Recreation as an expansion of the nearby State Park. The conservation easement on the remaining 65 acres will be transferred to the Land Trust of Napa County for permanent monitoring. Other 120 0
Toto Ranch Protection/Maintenance Donation of a conservation easement on a ranch south of Half Moon Bay; acquisition preserves scenic vistas and important natural resources along the Pacific Ocean. Agricultural Land 952 0
Triangle Marsh Restoration Rehabilitation Project consists of removal of 10,700 cubic yards of fill so site elevations over 2 acres will be one foot lower in elevation than normal tidal elevations. This will allow tides to inundate these areas and allow silt and seeds of tidal marsh plants to be naturally deposited. Expected time to restore the tidal marsh is 3 to 5 years. Tidal Wetland 33 0
Wavecrest Protection/Maintenance Land acquisition from a private donor. The parcel provides a key link along the California Coastal Trail, and provides important habitat for raptors and other wildlife. Grassland 206 0
