Overviews and Highlights
The Peconic Estuary system is made up of a series of shallow, inter-connecting bays fed by groundwater, creeks, and rivers. The Peconic Bay Estuary and its 340 miles of coastline support a variety of marine life, birds, and wildlife, and are also a vital economic, recreational, and scenic resource for Long Island. Although still in the process of developing its Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan for protecting and preserving the Bay, the Peconic Estuary Program (PEP) has already carried out 26 demonstration and implementation projects for improving the state of the Bay.
Priority water quality issues the PEP will address in its CCMP include nutrient over-enrichment, coliform contamination, toxic chemical contaminants, and brown tides. Priority living resource issues of concern include shellfish, submerged aquatic vegetation, wetlands, and finfish habitat.
