Invasive Species Workshop

OCPD cosponsored a series of five regional Invasive Species Workshops with the Office of Research and Development. These regional workshops, which culminated in a two-day National Workshop that took place on July 12 and 13, 2000, addressed the EPA science and policy implications of invasive species. The primary goals of the workshops were to - 1) provide current information; 2) identify policy implications; 3) identify research implications; and 4) establish follow-up procedures.

The National Workshop group prepared a National Invasive Species (NIS) report, titled Nonindigenous Species: An Emerging Issue for the EPA. The document provides up-to-date information on: 1) the known effects and risks of NIS on ecosystems and human health, 2) the phylogenetic groups and media effected, 3) the geographic scope of NIS invasions, 4) the current state of the knowledge regarding NIS prevention, control and mitigation options, 5) NIS activities of other state and federal agencies, and 5) EPA NIS activities. The document also discusses EPA science and policy implications, options for expanded involvement and suggestions for follow-up actions.
