Kansas Partners for Fish and Wildlife:
Site briefly discusses Kansas wetlands and programs aimed at protecting
and restoring them. This site is nice to look at, but the information
is not very complete. Check out the link to Verdigris River Riparian
Project if you go here.

Lower Mississippi Delta Initiative:
Describes large-scale conservation and restoration initiative for the
lower Mississippi River, includes contact information. Not much
information, but may provide a good reference.
Clean Water Action Plan: Describes
Kentucky's methods for assessing "critical watershed" status to waters
of the state. Reference information, no restoration information.
Wetland Mitigation Guidelines:
Reference information for Kentucky's wetland mitigation guidelines.
Reference information to assist mitigators, no real restoration

The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary
Program: This partnership between EPA and the state of Louisiana
was created under the National Estuary Program. The program's charter
was to develop a coalition of government, private, and commercial interests
to identify problems, design pollution control strategies, recommend
corrective actions, and seek implementation commitments for the preservation
of Louisiana's Barataria and Terrebonne basins. The program focuses
on developing sustained citizen involvement in activities such as educational
field trips, vegetation planting campaigns, and cleanup efforts. The
web site also provides wetland-related scientific and educational materials.
This site would be useful for anyone seeking scientific information
on the Barataria-Terrebonne Estuary or for groups interested in visiting
the estuary for themselves.
The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana:
The Coalition was created to restore and preserve the delta ecosystem
of the Mississippi River Delta. The coalition has raised awareness of
the need to restore the delta; played a major role in selecting restoration
projects under the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration
Act; and worked to eliminate problems standing in the way of project
completion. This site provides information on getting involved in
Louisiana coastal restoration and publishes newsletters and reports
highlighting coastal restoration.
Louisiana Department
of Natural Resources: Save Louisiana Wetlands: This web site offers
information about the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Coastal
Management Division's Save Louisiana's Wetlands program. The many facets
of the program are outlined in detail. This site would be useful
for anyone interested in wetland protection, particularly along the
coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
Southeastern Louisiana University Wetlands Research Laboratory:
This is the home page for this wetlands research group. It highlights
a bald cypress swamp restoration, offers volunteer opportunities, includes
contacts, and includes links to other sites, including a wetlands biogeochemistry
page. This site is entertaining and informative. There are some
great photographs here as well.
Lake Ponchartrain Basin Foundation: This
site offers information on many different projects within the Lake Ponchartrain
basin area, including links to WMAs, etc., many provide contact information.
Some of the graphics here may not work, but there is a lot of information.
Make sure you check out "Everyday ways to help save our lake", and "Learn
about the lake" (where the projects are listed). This comprehensive
site is definitely worth a visit.
Lower Mississippi Delta Initiative:
A description of the large-scale habitat protection and restoration
program. Highlight problems, actions taken, groups involved, and includes
contact information. Informative, though not completely thorough.
Tensas River Basin Initiative:
Similar format to above site. Informative, though not completely thorough.
Gulf Coast Marsh Ecosystem
Restoration/Management/Protection: Description of a large scale project
that includes contact information, information on portions of the project
already underway, suggestions for where research is still needed. This
is another complete, informative site.
Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley Wetland
Conservation Plan: Brief description of a project under way to restore
wetlands. Includes participating groups, contact information. Not
much in the way of restoration information here, but may provide a reference
if you're working in this area.
Louisiana DNR: restoration
projects by parish: Listing of Louisiana coastal restoration projects
according to parish (in LA, the state is organized into parishes instead
of counties). Some have links to documents in Acrobat format, most are
just a project name and other state use codes. Good resource for
finding out what's out there, but not a lot of information.
Louisiana DNR: The
Louisiana DNR home page. Links to Atchafalaya Basin program and coastal
wetland restoration program. Nice looking page, and helpful.
Has some nice links, too.
USGS Programs in Louisiana:
USGS page highlights several initiatives in Louisiana in a general overview
format. Contact information follows at the bottom of the page. Great
site for an overview of wetland projects in the state.
Louisiana Coastal Restoration Web Site:
Information on coastal restoration projects. This site is very complete,
it has many sections which can be explored to highlight different projects.
Overview of
Coastal Wetland Issues and Problems: As title says. USACE page lists
federal wetlands policies and programs. Good overview of federal
role.
Goal Setting and Success
Criteria for Coastal Habitat Restoration (Conference): Click on
Landscape Characterization and Restoration to learn about this program
to aid coastal restoration projects with ecological, land-use, and regulatory
information. If you are planning a coastal wetland restoration,
this may be helpful.
Louisiana DNR: listing
of projects by restoration technique: Same as above sight listing
by parish, but organized according to restoration type. If you're
looking for similar projects, this is the easiest way to find them.
Problems, Challenges,
and Experiences in Coastal Restoration, Protection, and Creation:
As title appropriately suggests, this USACE paper outlines problems,
challenges, experiences and suggestions for coastal restoration. Fairly
informative. Look here if you're considering a coastal restoraiton.
Subsidence: implications
for coastal wetland restoration in Louisiana: Discusses various
options for alleviating subsidence problems. Interesting and complete
discussion of the problem and potential solutions.
Tensas River Basin Initiative:
Discusses problems, actions taken, stakeholders and provides contacts. Good
overview of a problem and solutions.
Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station: Home page for this Southeastern
Louisiana University research station. They study wetland restoration
here and provide a bit of information and contacts. Little actual
restoration information, but contacting the directors may provide you
with a lot of information.
Backfilling
Canals to Restore Louisiana Wetlands: Scientific paper discussing
methodology and success of filling canals as short term mitigation/restoration
technique. Complete discussion, good reference.
Policy Considerations
for Recycling Wastewater Through Hydrologically Altered Wetlands:
Discusses three case studies to be analyzed to determine feasibility
of discharging secondarily treated effluent through them. Includes contact
information. May provide useful information if this is a component
of your restoration project.
The Use of Sediment Diversions in Fluvial Powered Wetland Restorations:
Discussion of a technique of wetland restoration. Discussion is very

Vegetative Responses to
Implementation of Cameron-Creole in Southwestern Louisiana, an Ecosystem-based
Watershed Project: Discusses this specific project-mostly vegetation

Status Report on the Crevasse
Program at Delta National Wildlife Refuge: Discussion of the success
of creating marsh areas along the Mississippi River through man-made
crevasses (breaks in levees). Good discussion of a successful program.

Friends of Scarborough
Marsh: This site details the efforts of a coalition of private citizens
and organizations working to protect Scarborough Marsh, a 3,100-acre
salt marsh just south of Portland, Maine. This site provides detailed
information about the marsh and why it needs to be restored.
The Gulf of Maine Council on the
Marine Environment: The mission of the Gulf of Maine Council is
to maintain and enhance environmental quality in the Gulf of Maine and
to allow for sustainable resource use by existing and future generations.
The web site provides links to habitat restoration grants, a discussion
forum, and a calendar of events. This site would be useful for anyone
planning a restoration effort in the Gulf of Maine or seeking to learn
more about restoration efforts there.
How Are They Doing?: status
of wetland banking agreements and activities: EPA Region 1 overview
of wetland banking activities listed by state. Not much information,
but lets you know what ideas are out there.
Bureau of Land and Water Quality (Maine):
This is Maine's BLWQ home page that links to grant information, watershed
information, the state DEP site (with regs), and much more information.
Not much restoration information, but links to a lot of other potentially
helpful information.
Coastal Habitat
Restoration, overview: Overview of several New England marsh restoration
efforts and other similar efforts. Page gives you access to the complete
report in Acrobat form. Links to a Gulf of Maine web page. Very
complete discussion-even in the overview. This will be an important
source of information for any similar projects.
Gulf of Maine-Council on the Marine Environment:
Overview of Gulf of Maine watershed with color maps and diagrams, contacts,
calendar of events. Beautiful, well-organized site with lots of
information on the gulf; no restoration information, though.
Bates College
Environmental Studies Program: Overview of this academic departmentin
a Maine college. Information that might be helpful in the professor
profiles and contact information. No additional information, though.
Big Bog Wetland
Restoration: Brief form overview of this wetland restoration project
with contact information. There isn't much information here, but
contacting the state biologist listed on the page might provide you
some additional information.

Alliance for
the Chesapeake Bay: Alien Invaders: Alien Invaders is a special
feature presented in the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay Journal. The
article describes six common invaders to the bay and also provides a
watch list of other problematic plants and animals becoming more prevalent
in the Chesapeake Bay area. This site would be useful for anyone
interested in working to prevent destruction by alien species.
Alliance for
the Chesapeake Bay Conservation Landscaping: A BayScapes Homeowner's
Guide: This site provides a practical step-by-step guide to creating
Chesapeake Bay beneficial landscaping. This site addresses environmentally
sound lawns, lawn alternatives, tree and shrub selection, and pest management.
This site would be useful to any homeowner who wishes to create
environmentally friendly landscaping in their backyard.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation: This foundation
is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the Chesapeake Bay
through education and environmental protection and restoration. This
site provides news and resources about the bay, opportunities to get
involved in restoration activities, environmental education materials,
and a report of the status of the bay. Would be useful to people
seeking information about the Chesapeake Bay, the steps being taken
to restore it, and what they can do to help.
Environmental Concern, Inc.:
This Maryland based, nonprofit organization provides a variety of wetland
services, including design consulting, construction, native wetland
nursery plants, educational materials, professional courses, and horticultural
research. This site provides information useful for people working
with on-the-ground restoration projects.
The Maryland Department
of the Environment Wetlands and Waterways Program: This web page
includes extensive information about Maryland's efforts to protect and
restore wetlands. This site discusses Maryland's Wetland Conservation
Plan and restoration initiatives; it also offers an extensive list of
training and education resources. Would be useful to anyone wanting
to view an example of a successful state-level wetland management program.
Maryland
Surf Your Watershed: This web site contains information catalogued
on a watershed basis to assist with watershed planning, management,
conservation, and restoration projects. Information provided by the
site includes watershed indicators of human stressors (including wetland
losses), watershed profiles, restoration action strategies, and a bibliography
of watershed documents. This site would be useful for anyone seeking
information, strategies, and data on restoring watersheds.
The Chesapeake Bay Program:

Page which provides significant background on the Bay and highlights
projects under way. There is a lot of information here; this is
a site you should get lost in. Make sure to check out the "Tributary

Massachusetts Wetlands Restoration Program:
The Massachusetts Wetlands Restoration Program (MWRP) was established
in 1994 within the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA) to
implement a voluntary non-regulatory) program for restoring the Commonwealth’s
wetlands. MWRP inventories wetlands restoration sites within watersheds and
coastal regions, and facilitates the implementation of priority restoration
projects through its GROWetlands (Groups Restoring Our Wetlands) Initiative.
Once a restoration project is accepted into the program, MWRP, in collaboration
with its many federal, corporate, and non-profit partners, works with the
project sponsor to provide or obtain whatever assistance – financial, technical,
monitoring or other support - is required to complete the project.
The Buzzard's Bay
Project Natural Estuary Program Wetland Protection Page: This web
page provides a wide range of information on the Buzzard's Bay Project
in Massachusetts. Information includes specific steps planned to restore
this estuary, constructed and restored wetland information, and program
partnership information. This site is a good example of a current
large-scale estuary protection program.
Status of Wetland Banking Agreements and Activities:
Brief note on Massachusetts' stand on wetland banking.

Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary:
Home page for this sanctuary that contains wetlands. This may provide
reference wetland information.
Blackstone River National Heritage Corridor: Describes the factors polluting the river,
and efforts underway to restore it, with contact information. Good overview.
Association of Massachusetts Wetland Scientists:
Resource for wetland scientists in New England. May provide contacts
and restoration information specific to this area of the country.
Massachusetts
Coastal Zone Management: Resource for coastal programs; includes
contact information. Specific to coastal problems.
Bureau of Resource
Protection: wetlands and waterways program: State page outlining
programs in wetlands and waterways protection. Includes policy information
and contacts. Good resource, not much restoration information.

The Huron River Watershed Council:
This coalition of Huron Valley residents and local governments was established
under Michigan's Local River Management Act. Its members seek to protect,
rehabilitate, and sustain the Huron River System. The site provides
information on programs offered and opportunities to get involved, and
is an example of a community-based watershed and wetland protection
program.
Michigan
Department of Environmental Quality Wetland Page: This site contains
information on wetland identification, regulation, permits, restoration,
and education, as well as links to other wetland information. It
contains a broad range of information from basic descriptions of wetlands
to how to obtain a permit and other technical topics.
The Rouge River Project.
The Rouge River National Wet Weather Demonstration Project is a comprehensive
program to manage wet weather pollution to restore the water quality
of the Rouge River. The identification, protection, and restoration
of wetland habitat in Michigan's Rouge River watershed is an important
component of the ongoing Rouge River Project. Check out this web
site to learn about the Project's subwatershed wetland protection plans
and other efforts to meet the project's wetland goals.
Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council.
This group of citizens, lake associations, businesses, and resort visitors
works to protect the waters of northern Michigan. The Council seeks
to maintain the environmental integrity and economic and aesthetic values
of the lakes, streams, wetlands, and ground water of northern Michigan.
The council provides water quality analysis and modeling, technical
and consultation services, and conservation and resource planning to
Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet counties in Northern Michigan.
Evolution of Streambank
Stabilization and Watershed Restoration in Northern Michigan: Discusses
the changes in methodologies of streambank stabilization in Michigan,
and provides contact information. Helpful if you're looking to do
this type of work.
Habitat Development
on Industrial and Private Property: The St. Clair Waterways for Wildlife
Program: Discusses the Waterways for Wildlife Program's initiation,
accomplishments, etc, and provides contact information. Good resource.
News from the areas of
concern: Brief update-form news on several river and wetland areas
surrounding Lake Michigan, including contact information. If working
in this area, you should be aware of these projects, plus, they provide
interesting descriptions of causes and actions taken to restore these
areas.
Restoration of Saginaw Bay Coastal Wetlands in Michigan: Another account of this
restoration project from an Army Corps perspective. Not as complete as above
sites, but good scientific perspective on the effort.
1997-1998 Michigan
MARSH Projects: Listing of projects and grant money received. No
details on projects. Again, lets you know what's going on out there,
but there's no project information, and no contact information.
Working Together to Renew the Milwaukee River Basin: Information on
the causes of degradation and effort to restore this watershed. Good
overview, if a tad scientific.

Minnesota
Waterfowl Association. This nonprofit organization preserves, restores,
develops, enhances, and protects Minnesota's wetlands and associated
uplands through public education, legislative initiatives, and projects
to benefit waterfowl, wildlife, and the environment. This site would
be useful for anyone wishing to get involved in wetland restoration
in Minnesota, or as an example of what a community can accomplish if
it works together.
The
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' Stream Habitat Program.
This program gathers and provides information on Minnesota's 90,000
miles of rivers and streams, helping to protect and restore them. The
site offers a link to many publications that would useful for restoration
projects; the publications address topics such as native and exotic
plants, ecosystem restoration, and wetland protection. This site would
be useful for anyone interested in restoration in northern climates.
Rivers Council of Minnesota.
The Rivers Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping
Minnesotans keep their streams and rivers healthy. The organization
seeks to complete this mission by connecting people with restoration
projects, monitoring water quality, and encouraging conservation of
riverside lands. This site would be useful for anyone seeking information
on river restoration in Minnesota or looking for encouraging stories
of past successes.
University of
Minnesota Restoration and Reclamation Review. This site provides
a listing of on-line student journals from the University of Minnesota,
St. Paul, with restoration/reclamation-related articles from 1996 through
2000. This site is useful for anyone seeking journal articles on
large-scale restorations; agricultural, urban, and residential landscapes;
drastically altered land; and environments with low resiliency.
Evaluation of Restored Wetlands in the
Prairie Pothole Region: This web page serves as an invitation to
aid in a large scale study of wetland restoration in this multi-state
area. Includes information on who to contact to get involved in the
study. If your project encompasses part of this region, this USGS
study could use your data.
The Rebirth
of Stang Lake: This site gives an overview of a wetland restoration
project from the site's initial degradation through its completion,
and gives contact information. This is an excellent example of a
start-to-finish wetland restoration. The methodology included is understandable,
and contact information will enable you to get more information on the
status of the project.
National Biological
Service Competition Selects Minnesota Prairie Pothole Study: Press
release announcing funding of a Minnesota project to study effects of
non-native fish rearing in pothole wetlands. Just a little information,
but may be helpful to prairie pothole restoration efforts.
Fact
Sheet: effects of bait fish on restored prairie wetland ecosystems:
This is the fact sheet that complements the above press release notes;
it presents goals and expected results, and gives contact information.
This site along with the above site on the same topic will give
a good picture of this research study.

Protecting
the Mighty Mississippi at its Source: Discusses a community effort
to ensure high water quality at the source of the Mississippi River
in Minnesota. Restoration information focuses on reducing non-point-sources,
and controlling erosion.
Restoring Wetland Habitat at
Duluth's Grassy Point: Thorough discussion of a wetland restoration
project with concepts (history, restoration techniques, photographs,
etc...) divided into separate page links. This site is well-organized
and very informative.
Minnesota River
Basin: This site deliniates watersheds of the basin and links to
projects within the basin. Lots of information, another good site.
Dakota Soil and Water Conservation
Disctrict: Reinvest in Minnesota Reserve Program: Outlines a state
program that encourages landowners to retire environmentally sensitive
lands (including wetlands and riparian areas) from agriculture. Good
source of information.
Watershed
Organizations and Projects in the Minnesota River Basin: Outlines
several projects within the basin and gives contact information. Descriptions
are brief, but may be a great resource in this region.
Minnehaha Creek Watershed District:
Page that details projects going on in the basin. Not much restoration
information, but may be a good resource.

Minnesota Conservation Reserve
Enhancement Program Fact Sheet: Describes program goals, costs,

program, and good source of information if you could deal with this

Missouri
Department of Natural Resources Wetlands Page. This site provides descriptions
of plants and animals often present in Missouri wetlands, as well as
information on the restoration and management of both large and small
wetlands. This site would be useful to anyone wishing to learn more
about wetlands or looking for easy-to-understand methods of restoring
wetlands.
Missouri Stream Team.
Missouri's Stream Team program is an opportunity for residents near
the Missouri River to get involved in river and stream conservation.
Stream Team volunteers monitor water quality, conduct stream cleanups
and restoration projects, and teach the public on how to better preserve
our streams. This site provides practical information for Missouri
Stream Team members as well as those wishing to get involved in the
Stream Team program.
Lower Mississippi Delta Initiative:
This is a description of a large-scale restoration effort which includes
parts of Missouri. Highlights environmental problems, actions taken,
stakeholders, and contacts. This is a brief, but informative description.
University of Missouri Center
for Agricultural, Resource, and Envrionmental Systems: Home page
for this educational center. "Current Projects" lists a few wetlands-related
projects, mostly this center may be able to provide you with a resource.
Wetlands Reserve Program (Missouri Overview):
Provides background information on Missouri wetlands history, current
wetlands needs, restoration underway, including contact information.

Montana Water. This
site, designed and maintained by the Montana Water Center, Montana State
University, Bozeman, serves as a comprehensive resource for those working
with Montana water resources. The site includes an on-line database
of technical watershed resources, a database of grants and other funding
resources, information about policy and legislation, educational resources,
and links to maps and other resources. This site would be useful for
anyone looking for information about water issues in Montana and other
northwestern states.
Montana's Wetlands
Information Clearinghouse. This site provides wetlands information
specific to Montana, including maps, wetland resources, indicator species,
and other information. The site also provides links to other sources
of wetlands-related information throughout the country. This site would
be useful for anyone looking for information about wetland issues in
Montana and other northwestern states.
University
of Montana Riparian and Wetland Research Program. This program developed
by the School of Forestry at the University of Montana, offers information
on issues relating to the ecology and management of riparian areas and
wetlands of the state and the region. The site provides an on-line database
detailing wetland and riparian research projects and offers a database
of more than 8,000 wetland photos, along with the Bureau of Land Management
inventory of health assessment data. This site would be useful for
anyone interested in wetland and riparian research or anyone looking
for photographs of Montana wetlands.

Meadowlands Environmental
Research Institute (MERI). MERI conducts and sponsors research in
ecology, environmental science, and information technology that might
benefit estuarine systems in northeastern New Jersey. Digital Meadowlands,

New Mexico Department
of Environment Watershed Protection. The goal of New Mexico's Watershed
Protection Division is to develop and implement a program that will
reduce human-induced pollutants from nonpoint sources entering surface
and ground waters. The site provides information on wetland permits
as well as funding opportunities for wetland restoration. This site
is beneficial to people wishing to gain information about undertaking

Extension of Onondaga County developed this site to educate landowners
about landscaping methods that help to protect water quality. The
site provides easy-to-understand, practical efforts for private landowners.
The Green County Soil and Water
Conservation District. This New York Conservation District maintains
a stream restoration web page detailing the numerous projects they are
undertaking. The site offers maps, photos, and other details. This
site provides useful stream restoration-related resources and a list
of training courses.
Hudson-Raritan Estuary Restoration
Project. This project is sponsored by a partnership between Restore
America's Estuaries and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The web site provides information on the conditions in the estuary and
volunteer and other efforts to restore the estuary. This site provides
many ideas for hands-on project that can be undertaken to help restore
the health of an estuary.
The New York/New Jersey Harbor
Estuary Program. This program is a multiyear effort to develop and
implement a plan to protect, conserve, and restore the estuary. Several
workgroups allow participants to focus on a specific aspect of estuary
protection. The habitat restoration workgroup has recently released
its 2001 Status Report, listing numerous priority sites to be acquired
and restored. Most of the sites are wetlands. This site provides
a good example of a large community-based restoration effort.
New York State Wetlands Forum.
The Forum is a nonprofit group seeking to improve communication among
people interested in wetlands and make available to Forum members and
the public information that will increase their knowledge and understanding
about wetlands. The Forum also calls attention to and objectively discusses
local, statewide, regional, national, and global wetland issues as they
relate to wetland issues in New York. This site offers on-line wetland
publications, information about upcoming events, and summaries of wetland-related
news and announcements.
Peconic Estuary Program The PEP is an
innovative partnership of local, state, and federal governments, citizen and environmental
groups, businesses and industries, and academic institutions.This site provides useful
information on issues currently facing the bays and outlines the steps being taken to

Carolina Estuary Reserve
Foundation. The Foundation promotes state acquisition and protection
of a diverse system of coastal natural areas to advance research, education,
and partnerships. This site provides information about estuaries,
the research being done by the Carolina Estuary Reserve Foundation,
educational opportunities at the reserve, and efforts to protect estuaries.
Estuary Live. Estuary Live
provides virtual field resources, including an electronic field trip,
live video pages, and links pages for elementary, middle, high school,
or college students. The web site also provides links to estuary related
reference materials and lesson plans. This web site would be useful
for teachers who wish to provide an interactive estuary experience to

The North Carolina Coastal Federation.
The federation is a nonprofit organization that seeks to protect and
restore North Carolina's coastal environment, culture, and economy through
citizen involvement in the management of coastal resources. The Coastal
Federation supports volunteer supported wetland restoration efforts
and projects to raise public awareness of the threats to coastal habitats.

North Carolina Wetlands Restoration
Program. The North Carolina Wetlands Restoration Program is an innovative,
nonregulatory program established by the North Carolina General Assembly
in 1996 to restore wetlands, streams, and streamside (riparian) areas
throughout the state. This site provides information about North Carolina's
Watershed Planning, projects taking place within the state, legal regulations
that address wetlands, and options for grant funding. This site
would be useful for anyone looking for information on North Carolina's

RiverLink. This regional
organization is spearheading the economic and environmental revitalization
of the French Broad River and its tributaries as a place to work, live,
