Guidance for Federal Land Management in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed
Riparian Areas
Riparian areas are natural buffers between uplands and adjacent waterbodies. They act as natural filters of nonpoint source pollutants, including sediment, nutrients, pathogens and metals. It is important to restore and protect healthy riparian areas because they can play a significant role in protecting waterbodies from adverse water quality impacts. Additionally, healthy riparian areas help decrease the need for costly stormwater and flood protection facilities.
