US EPA Tribal Nonpoint Source Workshop

Introduction

The 2009 workshop was the first National Tribal Nonpoint Source Workshop. This workshop was designed for tribes that were addressing NPS issues under CWA Section 319 and wanted to enhance their programs. The workshop assisted tribes to achieve and measure environmental results by providing detailed information on implementing best management practices, developing pre- and post- project monitoring protocols, providing data analysis tools, and developing and implementing watershed-based plans.

The workshop included:

• Tribal NPS case studies from across the United States
• Poster session featuring tribal NPS projects
• Data assessment tools training
• Introduction to the watershed-based approach and watershed planning
• Clean Water Act sections 106 and 319 program integration training
• Field trip to observe active BMPs near the resort such as:
  • Re-contouring stream channels
  • Jute bagging for hillside erosion control
  • Removal of non-native species
  • Runoff control
  • Trough development for livestock
