Project Title: Make Daffodil Valley Bloom Again
Project Description: As part of a four year project, girls from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds helped restore Daffodil Valley prairie and wetland to a natural and native habitat for Illinois wildlife, particularly birds of prey. Through numerous outings, girls removed non-native vegetation and reseeded the land with native plants. Girl Scouts of Shagbark
Project Title: Aquatic Investigation
Project Description: Girls improved water quality and created and enhanced habitats for native animals and plant species by creating a wetlands area at a Girl Scout camp. Girls increased their wetlands management, scientific research skills--including soil and water testing, and broadened their knowledge about aquatic habitats, native plants and animals and their inter-relationships within the aquatic ecosystem. Participants created field kits for other troops, hosted a community wide celebration and earned the Girl Scout Silver Award.

Project Title: Make Daffodil Valley Bloom Again
Project Description: A continuation of a four-year project to reclaim a 4.5 acre site, “Daffodil Valley,” and an adjoining ten-acre parcel of privately-owned land into a natural habitat consisting of prairie, savanna, upland woods, bottomland, and wetlands for the release of injured and orphaned wildlife rehabilitated through the Illinois Raptor Center. Girls planted trees, identified plants and animals, adopted birds, including studying the migration patterns and the nocturnal behaviors of birds, and installed and maintained footpaths.

Girl Scouts of the Mississippi Valley
Project Title: Restoring Iowa Prairies-Phase 2
Project Description: Because native tallgrass prairie is now less than 0.1% of the original region, a sustainable management plan will be developed to ensure the health and growth of the recently restored two-acre prairie habitat at Camp Conestoga. The endangered Eastern Prairie Fringe Orchid will be introduced to the prairie, pending a positive evaluation from the USDI-FWS. Girls will develop a prairie/environmental education curriculum to be delivered during resident camp and available to troops and groups year round. Through hands-on environmental education activities, girls will become leaders and stewards of conservation and natural resource issues. Through this partnership, girls will network with agency staff to explore careers in science, environmental science, and the outdoors and understand the importance of safeguarding native habitats.

Project Title: Field of Dreams
Project Description: Girls will participate in the restoration of a tallgrass prairie to discover their own natural heritage. The girls will visit the prairie quarterly to partake in hands-on seasonal restoration activities including plant propagation, removal of invasive species, avian ecology, aquatic plant and animal monitoring, and landscape genealogy.
