Fiscal Year 2013 Source Reduction Assistance (SRA) Grant Summaries
Each year EPA provides funding to state agencies, federally-recognized tribes, and colleges and universities (that are instrumentalities of a state), local, city and township governments, nonprofit and community based grassroots organizations, and independent school districts and private institutions of higher education to support P2 activities across all environmental media — air, water and land. The grants are dependent on Congressional appropriation and the quality of proposals received.
This page provides summaries, which EPA published in February 2014, on how grant recipients plan to spend the matching grants and/or cooperative agreements EPA awarded in fiscal 2013 under the Source Reduction Assistance Grant Program. The summaries include applicant's name, the federal dollar amount (for the first year in cases of multiple year grants), and a brief description of the project.
The summaries are intended to inform the public and P2 practitioners how EPA grant money is being spent and to facilitate information exchange among the states' P2 programs and spread ideas.
In fiscal year 2013, EPA had approximately $1.47 million to fund SRA program activities to help develop and sustain P2 related tools, research, educational approaches, and innovation.

Region 4 (AL, FL, GA, KY, MS, NC, SC, TN)
Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center
EPA grant: $40,000
The grantee will collaborate with stakeholders to implement a community-based Kentucky Economy, Energy and Environment initiative to help integrate energy efficiency, lean practices, waste reduction and water conservation into the operations of small-to-mid-sized manufacturers.
Waste Reduction Partners
EPA grant: $40,000
The grantee will provide on-site Lean and Green assessments to North Carolina small enterprises; demonstrate innovative technical assistance delivery; and empower clients to carry on Lean and Green reviews within their businesses.

University of Texas at Arlington
EPA grant: $47,927
The grantee will use an Economy, Energy and Environment framework to engage Austin area business communities to reduce waste in the hospitality industry. Special emphasis will be placed on reducing food waste, building partnerships, and achieving measurable environmental outcomes.
Region 7 (IA, KS, MO, NE)
Kansas State University
EPA grant: $53,165
In partnership with the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, the grantee will: 1) perform on-site reassessments of clients assisted through P2 intern programs; 2) survey all reassessed clients to ascertain their motivations for implementing P2 recommendations; and 3) analyze the data to determine the types of clients and P2 recommendations that result in the greatest implementation, and gain a better understanding of the factors that motivate clients to implement different types of P2 recommendations.
University of Nebraska
EPA grant: $73,916
The grantee will provide source reduction technical assistance and research expertise by enlisting student interns to help Nebraska’s agricultural irrigators and producers achieve multi-media source reduction. Special emphasis will be placed on reducing water use and energy consumption. The project will also provide assistance to agricultural production businesses and rural golf courses. Based on projections from past data, the work will generate a P2 cost savings of $118,000 per year; reduce water use by approximately 300 million gallons; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 245 MTCO2eq.
