Performance Track and Wildlife Habitat Council to Offer Joint Workshop
On November 17, 2004 in Baltimore, Maryland, the Wildlife Habitat (WHC) and Performance Track will hold a joint technical workshop during WHC's 16th Annual Symposium. The workshop will introduce the multiple benefits and opportunities of WHC certification and Performance Track membership, and will include a ceremony to recognize a Performance Track member that has achieved outstanding results in improving wildlife habitat. Participants will gain useful information and the motivation to pursue a new voluntary initiative. EPA considers WHC programs to be excellent models for use by Performance Track member facilities that must meet criteria for community outreach and improved environmental performance in a number of areas, including wildlife habitat. These companies experience tangible cost savings and other benefits that accrue from positive recognition and improved community relations. For more information, or to register, please see the workshop announcement.
Performance Track Accepts 19 New Facilities
On August 30, 2004, EPA announced 19 new facilities from 11 states and Puerto Rico for membership in Performance Track.
Several Performance Track companies have expanded their membership by adding new facilities, including DuPont, International Paper, Montenay Power Corp., Motorola Inc., Pfizer Pharmaceuticals LLC, Rockwell Collins, and Visteon Corp. Two companies joined the program with multiple facilities: International Rectifier Corp. and Forever Resorts. International Rectifier members are the HEXFET facility, Temecula, California, and the El Segundo facility, El Segundo, California. The four Forever Resorts members will minimize environmental impacts in various ways. For example, Signal Mountain Lodge in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park has committed to using recycled building materials and purchasing wind energy to offset greenhouse gas releases associated with travel to the resort.
Other new Performance Track members are: Arizona Chemical, Dover, Ohio; DuPont - Mt. Clemens Plant, Mt. Clemens, Michigan; DuPont EKC Technology, Hayward, California; Georgia-Pacific Resins Inc. - Russellville Chemicals, Russellville, North Carolina; Kodak Colorado Division Windsor, Colorado; Rocky Mountain Park Company/Holiday Inn, Estes Park, Colorado; Montenay Bay, Panama City, Florida; Motorola Inc., Plantation, Florida; Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Vega Baja, Puerto Rico; Visteon - Sheldon Road Plant, Plymouth, Michigan; and WaferTech, Camas, Washington.
EPA also welcomes the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York, which has committed to restoring and conserving 30 acres of habitat, and Yankee Freedom II - Dry Tortugas National Park Ferry, Key West, Florida, the first ferry service to join the program. The first facilities from Kansas and Nevada joined Performance Track in this round: the Wichita Rockwell Collins Service Center in Wichita, Kansas; Black Canyon Willow Beach River Adventures, Boulder City, Nevada; and the Cottonwood Cove Resort and Marina, Searchlight, Nevada.
Performance Track now represents 45 states and
Puerto Rico.
New MOA Signed With Utah
Performance Track signed its eighth state Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on September 7, 2004. Utah and EPA entered into the MOA to signal their cooperation in ensuring the success of the newly launched Clean Utah! program and Performance Track. Dianne R. Nelson, executive director of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), joined Jessica Furey, associate administrator of EPA's Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation, and Jack Hidinger, director of sustainable practices and state partnerships for EPA Region 8 to sign the MOA in the Utah governor's board room in Salt Lake City. The MOA between Utah and EPA is unique because the agreement spells out exactly how DEQ and EPA will coordinate Clean Utah! and Performance Track.
Clean Utah! is a voluntary program designed by Utah DEQ, in consultation with EPA and interested stakeholders, to recognize and reward facilities that have implemented environmental management systems and are willing to take steps beyond those required by rule or statute to prevent or reduce pollution. Utah Lieutenant Governor Gayle McKeachnie attended the event and signed an official proclamation to launch the state's performance-based program. Lt. Gov. McKeachnie praised a stakeholder group, including industry representatives, trade associations, government officials, and members of the environmental community, that helped develop the program. He made special note of the significant contributions to the development of both the Utah program and the MOA that were made by Corbin Darling of the OECA Office in EPA Region 8, Tamera Bedford of EPA Performance Track in EPA Region 8, and Renette Anderson of Utah DEQ.
Clean Utah! provides three tiers of
participation. At the initial level, participants
develop an environmental management system (EMS).
After their EMS has been implemented for one
complete cycle, participants are eligible to move
on to the Partner level, where they agree to
complete projects aimed at improving their
environmental performance, minimizing their
environmental impacts, or benefiting the
environment in the region. After implementing their
EMS for three cycles and completing their Partner
level requirements, participants may request
designation at the Leader level. Applicants are
screened at each level to ensure compliance and are
required to file an annual report documenting their
progress. For additional information on Clean Utah!
