IPM in Schools
Pesticide Environmental Stewardship 2005 Report
EPA's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Schools program has achieved great success in the past ten years. During this time, the Monroe Model (named after the IPM in Schools program in Monroe County, IN) has reduced pesticide applications by 71 percent and pest complaints by 78 percent in school districts across the country.
In 2005, IPM practices were increasingly adopted by schools in different states. The following examples demonstrate increases in IPM in Schools:
- In Alabama two new school districts, Birmingham and Mobil, made a commitment to practice IPM.
- Arizona’s IPM program grew exponentially, with over 350,000 children positively affected by the Arizona Children’s Environmental Health Coalition.
- The University of Florida joined with Brevard County to demonstrate a model IPM program for all of Florida. The University is working on IPM fire ant management and enhancing the national IPM in Schools website.
- North Carolina State University recognized 21 school districts across the State for their efforts and progress in adopting IPM.
- In Ohio, a successful IPM program in Cleveland is being adopted by school districts in the Akron and Cleveland areas.
- In Utah, Salt Lake City initiated an IPM in Schools program. Taking the same approach as the Arizona Children’s Environmental Health Coalition, the City is not only managing pests; it also is eliminating unnecessary chemicals and indoor air allergens.
- The Washington Toxics Coalition is working
with school districts to implement school IPM, and Seattle committed
to a new policy to reduce pesticide
use.
The IPM Institute of North America continues its IPM certification program: - Fort Campbell, Kentucky, is now home to an IPM STAR certified school system and child development center serving the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division.
- In 2005 Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, received the Army’s first IPM STAR award for a child development center.
- Other certified schools are in Annapolis, MD; Auburn City Schools, AL; Buffalo Public Schools, NY; Dubuque Community School District and Kyrene School District, AZ; Lewiston Public Schools, ME; Milwaukee Public Schools, WI; Monroe County Schools, IN; Newton Public Schools, MA; Pittsburgh Public Schools, PA; South Kitsap School District, WA; Vancouver Public Schools, WA and Washington Elementary School District, AZ.
