Section 2: What is on the back panel?

2. Directions for use

Directions for use provide instructions to the user on how to use the product, and indentifies the pest(s) to be controlled, the application sites, application rates, and any required application equipment. Directions for use include the following elements in the following order:

  1. “Directions For Use” heading
  2. Use classification statement (if applicable): The phrase: “Restricted Use Pesticide.”
  3. Misuse and related statements: The statement: “It is a violation of federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.” Additional statements relating to misuse are acceptable for residential/household use products.
  4. Worker Protection Standard (WPS) requirements (if applicable): See “Worker protection labeling” below.
  5. “Application Directions subheading” (if applicable): This section may include information on how the product works and give directions that are applicable to all the use sites and pests listed on the label. Historically, headings such as “General Instructions” or “Instructions and Information” have been allowed, but are no longer considered acceptable, since the statements may be interpreted as advisory.
  6. Use restrictions statement (if applicable): General (non-site–specific) precautions, restrictions, or limitations of the product. Any precautions and restrictions that apply to specific site(s) and pest(s) must be included in the directions specific to that combination, for example: “Do not graze winter wheat within 30 days of application.”
  7. Resistance management (if applicable): Registrant may add voluntary pesticide resistance management labeling guidelines based on target site/mode of action for agricultural uses.
  8. Chemigation information (If applicable): Statements related to the application of pesticides to crops through an irrigation system.
  9. Spray drift labeling (if applicable): Information about the risk from potential spray drift, based on the use patterns for any given product.
  10. Endangered species statement (if applicable): A statement informing the user of potential risk to endangered species.

3. Storage and disposal instructions

Storage and disposal instructions provide instructions for storing the pesticide product and for disposing of any unused pesticide and the pesticide container.

4. Warranty statement

The warranty statement is a disclaimer of liability for damage that may be caused by use of the product. Such statements are placed on most pesticide products by the registrant. When it is included, it must conform to EPA requirements.
