Environmental Engineering


The Superfund program was created as a result of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). CERCLA was enacted on 12/11/80, and amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986. These acts established broad authority for the government to respond to problems posed by the release, or threat of release, of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. CERCLA also imposed liability on those responsible for releases and provided the authority for the government to undertake enforcement and abatement action against responsible parties.

EPA Clean-Up Information Exit EPA Disclaimer

The Hazardous Waste Clean-up Information website provides information about innovative treatment technologies to the hazardous waste remediation community. It describes programs, organizations, publications and other tools for federal and state personnel, consulting engineers, technology developers and vendors, remediation contractors, researchers, community groups, and individual citizens. The site was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency but is intended as a forum for all waste remediation stakeholders.

National Exposure Research Laboratory

The National Exposure Research Laboratory's Environmental Science program develops and applies approaches to identify and characterize exposure of humans and ecosystems to chemical pollutants such as petroleum or uranium, physical stressors such as land use practices, and other risk factors in our environment.

EPA Center for Subsurface Modeling Support

The EPA Center for Subsurface Modeling Support, or CSMoS, provides a source for publicly available ground-water and vadose zone modeling software and services. It was established in 1989 to distribute models and databases developed by EPA, to provide technical support for them, and to provide reviews of model applications at hazardous waste sites.

National Analytical Radiation Environmental Laboratory

The National Analytical Radiation Environmental Laboratory (NAREL) is located in Montgomery, Alabama. It is EPA's primary environmental laboratory for radiological measurements. NAREL provides direct analytical support and expert technical assistance to EPA Regions, other EPA offices and other federal, state, and Tribal agencies. The laboratory helps identify the types and quantities of radioactive contaminants at cleanup sites. Laboratory staff members act as subject matter experts on laboratory radiochemical methods, radiological laboratory operations, and evaluation of radiological laboratory data. NAREL operates EPA's RadNet system and has the expertise and equipment to analyze samples collected in the field following a nuclear or radiological incident or accident. NAREL plays a lead national role in preparing for a nuclear incident by developing guidance and laboratory methods, offering training courses in radiochemistry and conducting proficiency testing of commercial, state and other federal laboratories. NAREL also evaluates radon instruments and oversees EPA's radon blind testing program.

National Center for Radiation Field Operations

The National Center for Radiation Field Operations (NCRFO) is an essential component of EPA's Radiological Emergency Response Team (RERT) and is key to EPA's response to radiological emergencies and accidents nationwide. The National Center coordinates RERT field capabilities for preparedness planning, working with the Office of Emergency Management, Regional Emergency Response programs, and the Agency's Special Teams. It assesses sites contaminated with radioactive material, and manages all of ORIA's field resources, such as on-site monitoring and communications equipment. The National Center provides training on field radiological emergency response operations to EPA staff, states, tribes, local organizations and other federal agencies. In addition, it assists tribes in developing and maintaining environmental expertise through the Tribal Air Monitoring Support (TAMS) Center.

Ecosystems Research

EPA's Ecosystems Research helps protect the environment by ensuring that the best biological, chemical and geophysical science is used in exposure research. ERD investigates the environmental fate and transport of chemical contaminants and creates mathematical models to describe their behavior in the environment. These models can then be used to estimate how contaminants will move in a particular kind of natural environment.

Information includes articles, books, reports and curriculum resources that are written in non-technical language and available in various media formats, which are accessible and useful to students, educators, professionals, and policy makers as well as the general public.

Andrew W. Breidenbach Environmental Research Center Library

The Library provides scientific and technical information in support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's research programs. In addition to serving EPA staff, the AWBERC Library provides environmental information to federal and state government agencies, businesses, and the general public. The library provides reference service to the general public via phone, fax, or electronic mail. Online searching of free databases is provided by the library staff for the general public.

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry

The mission of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), as an agency of the Public Health Service in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is to prevent exposure and adverse human health effects and diminished quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites, unplanned releases, and other sources of pollution present in the environment.

Comprehensive Epidemiologic Data Resources

The Department of Energy (DOE) has developed the Comprehensive Epidemiologic Data Resource (CEDR) Program to provide public access to health and exposure data concerning DOE installations. Most of the data are from epidemiologic studies conducted by DOE-funded researchers as part of the DOE Worker Health

Nuclear Age Time-line

The time-line traces the nuclear age from the discovery of x-rays and radioactivity to the explosion of the first atomic bomb through the cold war to its thaw to the cleanup of the nuclear weapons complex. Mixed-Waste Information
