The City Map

This is the Recycle City Main Map. Here you can see a map of the entire city. It's pretty small, so the details are hard to make out.

Clicking on one of the four areas of the map will take you to that neighborhood

The Main Menu

To the left of the City map is the main menu. Clicking an icon on the menu will take you to one of these sections of Recycle City:

Neighborhoods

There are four neighborhoods in Recycle City. From the neighborhood picture you can zoom farther in and look at individual buildings by clicking on a building.

Some of the other objects and people lead to surprises and information.

Locations

The location screens allow you to look inside one of the buildings or other locations in Recycle City. On the surface there is just a picture, and a description of the location, but there's more here than meets the eye.

By clicking on the different objects in each location you can get a description of it, and information about how it can be recycled or reused. Once you have finished reading, you can simply click on "Return" to return to the location's picture again.

Setting Up Your Computer

Recycle City works best if you computer is set to display at least 256 colors. If your computer can display even more colors, that's great. Anything less, though, and you will notice that the graphics are not very easy to see.

Supported Browsers

Recycle City works with most Internet browser programs. Even if you don't have the latest and greatest, you will be able to enter the site, explore Recycle City, and learn how recycling benefits us all. The minimum you'll need is a browser that supports graphics and image map: Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, NCSA Mosaic, and the America Online browser.

To play the Clean Up Dumptown game, you will need to have a browser that supports Macromedia Shockwave, a software "plug-in" that allows you to see images that move and change. (At this time that includes Netscape Navigator 2.01 or greater, Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or greater, and America Online 3.0 or greater.)

Your browser may already have the Shockwave plug-in loaded as one of its features. If not, you will need to download it (that is, copy it from the Web onto your computer's hard drive) and install it. It's not as bad as it sounds! First click on the Dumptown game icon (or here) to go to Dumptown's welcome page. If you have a version of Shockwave that works with the game, a little box will tell you so. If not, it will take you to the Macromedia Web site's download center. Just follow the instructions!

If you have questions, you can reach us by emailing Bill Glenn at glenn.william@epamail.epa.gov. The Macromedia Web site can be found at www.macromedia.com.

Network Installations

If you are setting up many similar computers on a network to run Shockwave, you only need to download it once, and place the installation files on your network. Shockwave can then be installed by going to each machine, accessing the network location containing Shockwave, and running the Setup program.

Setting Up Your Browser

Make sure that you don't miss anything during your visit to Recycle City!

We have provided you with an easy way to make sure that your browser is sized correctly. Just click the Setup button below, and resize your browser window until you can just see the green rectangle in the window. If you are using a small monitor, you may not be able to see all of the rectangle in the window; if that happens you will need to change the way your browser is set up.

In Netscape Navigator, go to the Options Menu, and turn off "Show Directory Buttons" and "Show Location". If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer you will need to drag your toolbars up so that they stack on top of each other. Click on the toolbar tab on the left side of the toolbar, and pull it up into the toolbar above it. You may need to do this twice, depending on how many toolbars are currently showing.
