ENERGY EFFICIENCY IS A SMART INVESTMENT

Energy efficiency is an important strategy for addressing the growing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from energy generation and use. More than 85 percent of the energy consumed in the United States is from the combustion of fossil fuels, which produces CO2, the dominant greenhouse gas, as well as criteria air pollutants.

Energy efficiency -- obtaining the identical services or output such as heating, cooling and lighting for less energy input-- offers significant cost savings to businesses and consumers. The ENERGY STAR program enables businesses, homeowners, and others to realize the economic and environmental benefits of these technologies. Energy efficiency also improves the reliability of the U.S. power generation system while enhancing the comfort and affordability of housing and increasing the profitability of business.

Mid-Atlantic Region Focus

  • Energy Star PC Power Management Program Shows Big Results
EPA Region 3 has been marketing the ENERGY STAR Monitor Power Management Campaign to businesses, K-12 schools and governments throughout the year 2006. Organizations earn recognition for activating computer power management features. As a result of regional efforts, seventeen organizations have activated monitor power management in their organizations: In total 200,647 monitors and 177,520 computers were power management activated. This resulted in a savings which equated to 66,088,259 kWh and reduced 94,506,211 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) from entering the atmosphere for the year 2006. Regional organizations that have activate the power management features and worked with EPA on this campaign during 2006 will earn regional recognition by being highlighted.

West Virginia

  • State of West Virginia Proud of Energy Star Building Label
West Virginia recently earned and received the coveted Energy Star Building Label for it's Department of Environmental Protection's new Headquarters Building at 601 57th Street in Charleston, and they are determined to let others know about their efforts.

  • Energy Star Power Management Program
As a result of The State of West Virginia’s partnership efforts with the Energy Star Program and its commitment to saving energy and protecting the environment, the state has signed up as an Energy Star Million Monitor Drive member. The program makes power management simple by providing organizations with free tools and services to help activate monitor power management. West Virginia activated the monitor power management on 90 PC monitors organization-wide. The monitor power management initiative allows computer monitors to go into a low-power “sleep” mode when inactive in order to cut operational costs and save energy. For an organization with 1,000 computer monitors (at 5cents/kWh), enabling power management will save on average 200,000 kWh per year. Annually, this is equivalent to preventing over 300,000 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions, and conserving enough electricity to light 160 households.

  • ENERGY STAR EDUCATES SCHOOL DISTRICTS THROUGHOUT WEST VIRGINIA
Through a coordinated team effort by EPA Region 3, the State of West Virginia, the WVA Department of Education and the WVA Institute of Technology, a series of four workshops were provided for all 55 county school district facility and financial managers. The result was that 42 out of 55 counties participated in the training. The West Virginia workshops were conducted at four separate locations across the state and provided hands-on training for ENERGY STAR's Portfolio Manager Tool which will allow them to benchmark their buildings and obtain numerical energy performance ratings.

Delaware

  • Senator Carper Tours Energy Star Labeled School
Senator Thomas Carper toured the Seaford High School building and discussed its attributes with the facility management staff. In order to earn the Energy Star Building Label, schools must meet or exceed specific energy performance and indoor air quality requirements and also have their application certified by a professional engineer. In order to achieve the Energy Star Building Labels, facility managers from Seaford School District utilized EPA’s Portfolio Manager, an internet-based performance management tool. As a result, Seaford has received energy performance ratings for all 6 of their schools, which exceeded the industry average. Several regional and local media agencies were on hand to cover this event. (February 2007)

  • Seaford School District Recognized by Energy Star Program
Delaware's Seaford School District was recently recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for their commitment to energy efficiency from EPA Region 3's Air Protection Division Director, Judith M. Katz. Seaford School District has been a model school district through its partnership with the Energy Star Program. Not only has the school district utilized the Energy Star Portfolio Manager bench marking tool to rate their energy performance, but they also made adjustments to their building operations and technologies to improve efficiency until all of their six school buildings exceeded the average standard. Seaford also met the criteria to earn the Energy Star building label for all six of their schools. In order to earn the building label, they must meet specific energy performance and indoor air quality requirements and have their information certified by a professional engineer. Additionally, buildings that earn the building label typically use about 30 percent less energy than average buildings, without compromising comfort.

Pennsylvania

  •  Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP)
Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) developed the Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP), which assists small businesses within the state in recognizing and implementing the steps needed to increase profitability by cutting energy costs. Since its inception in 1980, Pennsylvania SBDC has evolved into a network of 18 university-based centers and more than 90 outreach locations operating under the guidance of a State Director. Since 1990, the SBDCs have helped Pennsylvania entrepreneurs start more than 22,000 new businesses and obtain $1.8 billion in start-up and expansion capital. More than 97,800 new jobs have been created. Under the direction of Christopher Lynch, EMAP provides a step-by-step program to evaluate energy savings potential for small businesses. The services include an analysis of current energy usage, an on-site assessment of facilities, recommendations for cost savings and assistance in locating sources of financing for the upgrades. According to Lynch, energy efficiency is one of the easier and most cost-effective steps a business can take to prevent pollution and increase profitability. “Payback periods are often very short and results can be substantial,” says Lynch. EMAP stresses that energy efficient upgrades most often make sense in the areas of lighting, HVAC equipment, office equipment, process equipment and motors and the building envelope. EMAP also assists firms in the development of new energy and environmental technology. One-on-one consulting assistance is provided to help prepare and review proposals, find new commercial markets and opportunities, identify potential funding sources and to find potential project partners.

  • Marple Township
Marple Township signed up as a pledge driver for the Energy Star Change a Light, Change the World Campaign. When organizations voluntarily sign up as a pledge driver they are listed under a pull-down menu on the Energy Star national website at www.energystar.gov/changealight. Exit EPA Click for disclaimer As a result of their pledges, Marple will be able to show township-wide statistics of how much pollution was prevented as a result of their effort. Marple Township has a total of 325 pledges, far exceeding their goal of 100. By inspiring 325 people to take the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge, Marple Township will save 161,586 kWh of energy and prevent 254,985 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
