Beach Sampling in Maryland
General Information
Other Mid-Atlantic Beaches
All of Maryland's ocean beaches are located in one county -- Worcester County. These include the beaches of Assateague Island National Seashore (which spans Maryland and Virginia) and beaches in the vicinity of Ocean City (the largest resort area). Maryland also has many beaches located on the Chesapeake Bay.
Water samples are taken during the beach season from Memorial Day through Labor Day. In marine or estuarine water, samples are tested for enterococci (a microorganism associated with fecal matter). At coastal beaches, advisories are issued if the running geometric mean at a site over a 30-day period exceeds 35 mpn or if a single sample exceeds 104 mpn. Maryland local health departments issue advisories acccording to Code of Maryland Regulations 26.08.09.08.
