Boats Used by the Freshwater Biology Team, Wheeling, West Virginia
The Freshwater Biology Team based in Wheeling has three boats and an inflatable Zodiac and two floating electrofishing platforms. These are used for research and bioassessment purposes on freshwater lakes, streams and rivers.

Wheeling #1 - "The Preston"
- 20 foot Jon Boat with twin 25 HP 4-Stroke gas engines
- can carry four to six scientists
- purchased new in ~ 1964 by the Public Health Service as part of the Ohio River Basin Water Quality Control Project
- unofficially named for Ron Preston, a fisheries biologist with EPA's Wheeling office from 1964 to 1996
- used for water sampling, sediment sampling, fish studies and benthic sampling on lakes and rivers
- can be used as an electrofishing boat or a basic work boat
- currently being used as part of the EPA sponsored Great Rivers EMAP project on the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers in Pennsylvania
- past work includes
- benthic fish trawling in the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers
- national lake surveys
- fish tissue contaminant surveys
- fish community structure surveys
- macroinvertebrate surveys

- unofficially named for Bobby Donaghy, a fisheries biologist with EPA's Wheeling office from 1965 to 2000
- used for water sampling, sediment sampling, fish studies and benthic sampling on lakes, streams and rivers
- can be used as an electrofishing boat or a basic work boat
- currently being used as part of the EPA sponsored National Flowing Waters project

Wheeling # 3 - "The Green"
- 18 foot handcrafted aluminum "Schaffer Boat" with a 90 HP and 25 HP 4-Stroke gas engines
- can carry six to eight scientists
- purchased new in 2002 by EPA
- unofficially named for Jim Green, a stream biologist with EPA's Wheeling office from 1967 to 2004
- built specifically for large river electrofishing, but can be used for water sampling, sediment sampling, fish studies and benthic sampling on lakes and rivers
- being used as part of the EPA sponsored Great Rivers EMAP project on the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers in Pennsylvania along with the National Flowing Waters project throughout the Region
