On this website, you will find information to minimize the environmental impact of brownfield redevelopment projects.

Brownfields revitalization returns abandoned or underutilized properties to productive use, cleans up the environment, creates jobs and strengthens the social fabric of communities.

EPA places strong emphasis on the sustainable reuse of brownfields. Building and development are hard on the environment. Although many brownfield redevelopment projects have sustainable elements, opportunities exist to make even greater strides in sustainable brownfields redevelopment.

Redevelopment of brownfield properties is beneficial to the environment and can also be profitable for the developer and the community. These benefits can be enhanced when properties are developed in a sustainable manner. If you have an EPA brownfields grant or are seeking one, consider using sustainable design in your brownfield redevelopment project.

We can also provide consultation as you plan your project. For further information or assistance on your sustainable brownfields reuse project, contact Kristeen Gaffney (gaffney.kristeen@epa.gov).
