Current Site Status

The cleanup at this site is complete. Honeywell's contractors recently excavated, backfilled, and graded and seeded the following areas: two small ponds, a bermed pit, a perimeter engineered surface water drainage ditch, and a process water discharge ditch.

Site Description

The Allied Chemical Corporation Works Site consists of an abandoned sulfuric acid manufacturing plant and surrounding area. Numerous processing tanks, piping and associated buildings, including a laboratory, are located within a fenced area of the site. The site also contains several containment ponds in an unfenced portion of the site. There are also areas which are believed to have been used to dump wastes in the unfenced portion of the site. The site is adjacent to the Avtex Fibers Superfund Site and is bordered by the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. Residences are located within ½ mile of the site.

Site Responsibility

This Site is being addressed by a Potentially Responsible Party under an EPA Superfund Removal Order.

NPL Listing History

This site is not on the National Priorities List.

Threats and Contaminants

Materials which remain at the Site include waste materials from the production of sulfuric acid, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), corrosive and flammable materials. Materials in the ponds, disposal areas and in the process equipment may release or may have been released into the environment.

Contaminant descriptions and risk factors are available from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, an arm of the CDC.

Cleanup Progress

Sampling to determine the extent of contamination was begun in the Summer of 1999. Areas of the site which required additional investigation were sampled recently. An amendment to the Extent of Contamination Study will be submitted to EPA.
