Current Site Status
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ordered Rhone-Poulenc Inc., a successor-by-merger to Stauffer Chemical Company, to do a short-term cleanup, also known as a removal action, at the Stauffer site. The Stauffer Management Company (SMC) acted in overseeing compliance with the order on behalf of Rhone-Poulenc. SMC submitted a Response Action Plan (RAP) which detailed how the extent of contamination was determined and how the contamination was removed and disposed of off site. SMC, at that time, also stated that they intended to demolish all site structures and dispose of the debris off-site, in an action separate from the EPA-approved response. All these cleanup and demolition activities were successfully accomplished.
The Stauffer Chemical Site, prior to demolition, included a four-story brick building, with a boiler house and stack, where carbon disulfide was manufactured. Adjacent to the building area were two disposal areas which were used to dispose of waste from the manufacturing processes. The Site occupies approximately 23 acres of land in a rural, residential setting. Residential properties are located adjacent to the Site. The manufacturing facilities were closed by the Stauffer Chemical Company in 1958. The Site is barren.

Threats and Contaminants
Waste, prior to disposal, was stockpiled in two areas causing runoff from these areas to be acidic. There was friable asbestos present on piping, process vessels and equipment. Some asbestos had fallen from these. Elevated levels of lead were also present in the soil in one area of the Site. Remediation of these adverse environmental factors has been accomplished.
This site was addressed by a Potentially Responsible Party under an EPA Superfund Removal Order. EPA approved the RAP. SMC began the Site cleanup by determining the extent of contamination, then moved equipment on Site. Site cleanup was completed in late 1999. The Administrative Order was closed by EPA on May 2, 2000.
