Community Update: Lagoon Excavation
Excavation of the lagoons was completed on January 5, 1999 almost three weeks ahead of the original schedule developed in August 1998. Approximately 18,000 tons of lagoon wastes containing arsenic have been sent via 201 rail cars for offsite treatment and disposal. It is probable that up to one million pounds of arsenic were removed from the site during this remedial action. Data suggests that the lagoons contributed significantly to groundwater contamination. With the excavation complete, grading and erosion control measures are implemented in preparation for final inspection by EPA and PADEP. This action was performed by the responsible parties without incident while under reduced oversight initiative.
