Drake Cleanup Team Resumes Treatment of Clean Soil to Test Plant Modifications

LOCK HAVEN, PA, Sunday, March 8 -- The Drake Cleanup Team began processing clean soil through the incinerator at about 8 a.m., today, in order to test engineering modifications which had been installed over the weekend. On Thursday, the team suspended treatment of hazardous soils from the Drake property when it discovered that steam-borne dust was escaping from the clean soil output bin. Over the weekend technicians modified its system for cooling and handling treated soil in order to correct problems with dust.

Once the cleanup team is satisfied that the modifications have corrected the dust problem, treatment of the contaminated soil will resume.

The dust problem occurred where treated soil exits the incinerator and is sprayed with a water mist to cool it down for handling. The high temperature of the treated soil converts the water into steam, and there was concern the steam carried some particles of treated soil into the air. The cleanup team decided to correct the situation before continuing with treatment of the contaminated soil.

The Drake Cleanup Team consists of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection who provide regulatory oversight to assure that all work is done in full compliance with health and safety regulations, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who provide engineering and management review and oversight, and OHM Remediation Services Corp. who operates the facility to clean up this former chemical plant property.
