Drake Will Cool Down Incinerator for Planned Maintenance

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.; December 4, 1998 - The Drake Cleanup Team will suspend feed of contaminated soil and will begin cooling down the incinerator Sunday night, in preparation for about a week of planned maintenance. Following maintenance work, the team anticipates relighting the gas burners early in the week of Dec. 14 and resuming the processing of soil later that week. Major work during this cycle will include inspections to most of the internal components of the incinerator system and replacement of worn feed screws. In addition, the cool down will permit inspections to the kiln that will contribute to plans for demobilization of the plant next summer, following completion of the Superfund project. Cleanup of this former chemical company property has passed the point of excavating, cleaning, testing and backfilling 68 percent of the original soil from the site. The team expects to complete the processing of soil by May 1999, at which time it will begin dismantling and removing the incinerator.
