LOCK HAVEN, Pa.; March 17, 1999 -- A momentary disruption to the induced draft fan, during maintenance operations yesterday afternoon, resulted in a brief, unplanned opening of the thermal relief vent (TRV). The TRV opening occurred at 5:37 p.m., and lasted for approximately 60 seconds. Feed of soil to the incinerator had been suspended, due to maintenance procedures, 44 minutes before the incident. When a planned TRV opening is necessary, feed is suspended for at least 30 minutes in order to purge the incinerator of hazardous gases. The TRV is a safety device that prevents damage to the incinerator's pollution control systems in the event of problems such as power failures. In accordance with the operating plan, notification was made to appropriate public officials following the TRV opening.
