Berks Sand Pit
EPA REVIEW SHOWS REMEDY IS WORKING AT THE BERKS SAND PIT SITE
The U.S. EPA recently conducted a five-year review of its clean-up activities at the Berks Sand Pit Site, located in Longswamp Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The purpose of this review was to ensure that EPA's activities to clean up the Site -- pumping and treating the contaminated groundwater -- were continuing to protect the public's health and the environment. The review also served to ensure that the clean-up activities are proceeding as EPA planned.
On September 27, 1991, EPA began cleaning up the contaminated groundwater at the Berks Sand Pit Site. Specifically, EPA has: installed and operated a groundwater extraction system; constructed and operated an air stripper to remove selected compounds from the contaminated groundwater, with discharge of the water after treatment to a secondary tributary of the Perkiomen Creek; and initiated local restrictions to prevent future installation of drinking wells in the contaminated areas of the aquifer. Over the past five years, EPA has been monitoring the quality of the surface water and groundwater.
The results of the five-year review indicate that EPA is protecting both public health and the environment by pumping and treating the contaminated groundwater at the Berks Sand Pit Site. EPA's water treatment plant is operating properly; it is effectively treating the groundwater for trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination.
EPA is required under the Superfund law to conduct a five-year review of its activities at Superfund sites with on-going clean-up actions.
The Site Administrative Record, which includes the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study Report, the Proposed Plan, and all documents used for selecting the preferred clean-up alternative is available for public review and copying at the locations listed below:
