Site Description

The State Road Site consists of a building and surrounding area located in a commercial/light industrial area of northeast Philadelphia. The property was formerly owned by a company which produced centrifugal castings and wrought iron products from the early 1930's until 1984.

This site is being addressed by a Potentially Responsible Party under an EPA Superfund Removal Order.

Threats and Contaminants

On January 28, 1997, an Emergency Response Assessment was conducted at the State Road Site by EPA Region III in cooperation with the Philadelphia Fire Department’s Hazardous Material Unit. A TSCA - PCB Compliance Inspection was also performed on that date. Approximately 24 transformers (or other oil-filled equipment), possibly containing PCBs, were discovered. It was also found that four transformers on the roof had been overturned and were empty. Oil stains were found on the building wall, sidewalk and street area readily accessed by the public.

Cleanup Progress

An extent of contamination study was conducted and a removal action completed to remove PCB contamination at the Site.
