U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY PROPOSES NO FURTHER CLEANUP ACTION FOR THE TYLER REFRIGERATION SUPERFUND SITE SMYRNA, DELAWARE
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed that: No Further Action be taken at the Tyler Refrigeration Superfund Site. EPA makes this proposal in consultation with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).
The site is located at 655 Glenwood Avenue, and comprises two former lagoons that were excavated and backfilled between 1973 and 1975. EPA conducted investigations in the vicinity of the lagoons and found low levels of the volatile organic compounds trichloroethane (TCA) and dichloroethene (DCE). However, these low levels of contamination do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment, and EPA has concluded that no further action is required at the site. Nevertheless, monitoring will occur to ensure contamination does not move off-site at levels which would pose a risk to human health and the environment in the future.
EPA's proposal is explained in a document called the "Proposed Plan." Interested citizens may view the document, and the information upon which the proposal is based, at the following two locations:
